Make A Sims Like Interaction System In Unreal Engine

Hey Everybody,

In this video I’m going to show you how to make an interaction system similar to what you see in the Sims. This will be based on the top down character project in Unreal Engine, but you can modify it to work with Third Person or First Person as well.

There’s a lot of logic going on behind the scenes of making a sim interact with an object in their environment. We’ll be simplifying this logic and focusing on a few key aspects of the system. So today we’ll be making:

- The stats user interface
- Two different kinds of interactions (one that animates the character and another that uses a pre-animated character)
- Changing the objects material on hover
- Adding a progress bar to show the time left to complete the interaction

Due to the amount of information in this tutorial I won’t be covering any info on how to animate your character. There’s lots of animations available on the unreal engine marketplace, many of which are free or very cheap. You can also grab free animations from Mixamo and there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that can walk you through importing those animations.

Fantastic! I would love to see a whole series on implementing Sims-like features in Unreal Engine. It is a great topic but unfortunately not a lot of info out there on it.

awesome finally what i was really looking for a "sims like tutorial" really big thanks, i really, really would love to see the full logic long version, showing how to proper make the character move to the right position or maybe when you have more than one position like the campfire make the character choose the better postion also add the interaction menu when clicking like when you click on the chair instead of just go sit a menu pop up with some choices like sit, sleep, go to, if the character have food then "eat on", also one thing i missed was the character stay sitting in the chair and when you oder him to move to another place or do another thing then it get up and start to move out.

really i really wish a big tutorial or tutorial series for this sort of topic.

Hi! Great tutorial! I was just wondering

Instead of a timer how would be the process of opening an option menu (like in the Sims) when we interact with the chair?
I finished the tutorial and I'm working on expanding it but I'm new to Unreal and it's been a pain in the ass to make ir work.

I wonder if you could shed a light :)

at 7:08 i am unable to get the UI stats variable to refrence any of the progress bars, im positive everything is spelled correctly and ive followed everything youve done up to this point, what am i doing wrong?
