This is such a great video, I'm learning so much! 😍I've only read a couple of Japanese mysteries, and they were 本格、which I really like because the author doesn't hide the one important clue from you, making the mystery impossible to solve 😂
I think 東野圭吾 is the most famous and well-loved living mystery writer in Japan, too! When I go to the used book store his books often take up not a shelf, but an entire bookcase 😱 Him being so prolific doesn't hurt, either hehe. Thanks for making this! 💕

Some minor corrections I want to point out in this video:
1, I wrongly pronounced "しゃ(Sha)" in this entire video, apologize for that, my Japanese needs a lot of work 😅
2, when I say Honkaku, Henkaku, they are more used with "mystery" as phrases "Honkaku mystery", "Henkaku mystery" in Japanese, not usually used individually.
3, when I say Honkaku wasn't created, I meant it wasn't used to identify the different styles of Japanese mystery, not that the word did not exist before that
4, at 8:20, the author's name should be Shimada Soji, not Yamada Soji
Thanks for watching <3

Ooh thank you for this very thorough video! I had read Tokyo Island by Natsuo Kirino as a teenager and I had absolutely loved it, now I want to read Out. Pluto is also such a major work of mystery literature!! I read all of them in about a week I think, I was so invested. Excellent recommendations, I have written down a lot of things!

Thank you for this very interesting video. A couple of years ago I read The Devotion of Suspect X and was completely blind sided by the ending! It was great. Since then I've read a few more Japanses mysteries and liked them all. I'll be adding quite a few new ones to my TBR based on your recommendations.

Oooh I'm also a huge fan of detective Conan 😍 what a great video idea! I have to say I'm not that familiar with Japanese mystery, but thank you so much for all these recommendations, I'm saving this video for reference for later. Thank you ☺️

What an amazing video! I don't read much mystery but if I do it's always Japanese. My favorite probably being Natsuo Kirino's Out, and Seishi Yokomizo's The Village of Eight Graves. (And of course I also love Detective Conan.)

stumbled upon your videos while looking for Convenience Store Women reviews. Interesting point about Chinese translation may be better interpreted. I too noticed when watching Kdrama or Jdrama, Chinese subtitles always made more sense.

While I predominantly read English books, I will read 人間便利店 (my first Chinese novel in many years)

I look forward to reading your recommendations on this video. 柯南 and 金田一 were my favorite Manga growing up!

Thank you for this informative and very helpful video. I'm just starting to discover Japanese mystery novelists so the subgenre breakdown is especially appreciated - leading me to the types of mysteries I'm most interested in. I would also recommend Naomi Hirahara, she is an American-born author of Hiroshima survivors. A number of her novels center the World War II generation who emigrated to California and their adjustment to life in a new country and culture, besides having a mystery to solve.

"Ubume" is pronounced as in "tOO" with a short sound, and Matsumoto "Seicho" is pronounced as in "SAY-cho."
