Led light is supposed to go in spots where it casts down the light onto a surface. Most people stick them anywhere where they are visble. Thats when the diffuser comes into place, you use that when its in a vislbe location. So when you stick the strip under an edge, its perfectly fine to use it without a diffuser

ehm duh... ofcourse it heats up more when its still on the package roll. They can stand the heat, LED is known for getting hot actually.
