Quick Tip! Improvised Planing Stop For Small Sections.

Planing small pieces of stock can be difficult. How do you hold it flat without crushing or bending the wood? And how do you keep what you're using to hold the work out of the way of the plane?

This quick tip uses a cheap saw that's blunt and due to be thrown away. It can't be sharpened because of its hardened teeth.

I make sure it's securely clamped to the bench and cover the excess teeth with masking tape to prevent my fingers getting caught.

It's then quick and easy to plane the thin pieces of wood.

Now that is so simple and very, very clever. A real slap on the forehead moment.

I like that. And contractors saws are so cheap you could dedicate one for this purpose - and customize it just for this role. Nice!

Very ingenious. This is something I have struggled with, so I will try this - if I get on with it I might make something a little more permanent with an old saw. Thanks for the tip.

Thank you so much for this! This has been a problem for me on several occasions and I would never come up with something like this. My bench is surrounded by two corner walls, so no clamps for me, but i have two rows of dog holes, so I used a worn japanese blade I was sorry to throw away, propped it under two bench dogs and it worked beautifuly on a project consting largerly out of small parts (wall mounted pencil holder). This solution saved my nerves for years to come.

Great idea. I thought of screwing a hacksaw blade to the bench top but, of course, that leaves holes.

you could also possibly use masking tape and super glu but that looks much faster
