Beautiful movie. It's very old, but it's better than a lot of current productions

Years ago I received a letter from film preservationist Kevin Brownlow! We had discussed Der Golem and he told me that Robert Floray told him(KB) that Ernst Lubitch told him(RF) that Wegenner told Lubitch that it took him(Wegenner) 2 weeks to get a useable performance from the children at the end!

I can't help but notice how, despite being this unstoppable force, the Golem has a certain child like innocence and curiosity in him, for example in the scene when he goes outside to get the groceries, or when he goes outside where the children are

Beautiful print! Good music, too.

Thanks for posting.

a fantasy movie yet it looks more authentically medieval than most of today’s “historical” medieval movies

Is this truly from 1920?! The visual quality is outstanding.

Watching this movie, I can't help but notice comparisons between the portrayal of Jews in this film (namely Rabbi Löwe) and our modern interpretation of wizards today (big beards, tall hats, wands, etc.) Was the European view of Ashkenazi Rabbis the inspiration for how we know wizardry today? Watching the Rabbi cast spells reminds me so much of films like Harry Potter.

James Whale's 1931 masterpiece appears to be influenced by this and Mary Shelly

Did they use the original music that accompanied this film (despite the fact there was no audio back then)?

The little girls in the 🔚 were really cute, it's really sad to say that they all have passed away, rip to them 🕊️.

Great film. The apperance of Astaroth as a motionless papier-mache head proves it's possible to be hokey and terrifying at the same time.

I love how the Jews of Prague take one look at the Golem and are clearly thinking, "You know, expulsion doesn't sound so bad after all. I hear Salonika's nice."

One of those trivial details that I can't quite ignore. The costumes on the gentiles are at least 100 years out of period. Rabbi Judah Loewe ben Bezalel served in Prague from 1588 till 1592, but the hose and doublets belong to the 15th century.

OMG, the first thing that came to my head when the sorcerer goes to remove the amulet that brought the Golem to life after he has now become obsolete after performing his main task, is how humanity will go to shut down AI when $hit hits the fan. but it will be too late, just like in this tale.

The SETS were amazing! Even Dr. Caligari's Cabinet had nothing on this film. The details alone- like the carved wood of the huge seats early on had the borders scrolled in '3 D'. Before plastic or even Styrofoam, everything had to be hand made of Wood or Papier Mache. Al the stairs and furniture were sturdy enough for the actors to stand/walk on. No detail like that exists today.
Called the "ancestor of Frankenstein", the Golem has many similarities with the monster (F). The scene where the little girl gives him an Apple- Frankenstein also developed human feelings as he played with little Maria (before accidentally offing her...). The history of the Golem myth makes good reading before you see this. Clearly, Anti-Semitism was rampant long before Hitler. TY-Great post!
