Psychologist Analyzes FNAF - William Afton

I have a PhD in psychology and I often find myself analyzing the characters of the video games I play. Which brings us to today’s client: The infamous William Afton - Villain of FNAF clad in fashionable purple. What goes on in that brain of his? What makes him tick? If he was in the real world, how would modern psychology assess his behavior? Let’s take a look!

There are lines in the books showing that he could have had a troubled childhood, “Before him stood someone who had spent so much of his life fighting like a cornered rat that he had taken on the mantle of bitter sadism as an integral part of himself. He would strike out against others and revel in their pain, feeling righteously that the world owed him his cruel pleasures. The guard's face, with its malevolent delight in Carlton's pain”.

And here’s how Charlie explains him in the Silver eyes, “Charlie looked at the man, considering him: the ill-fitting uniform, his peaky, almost exhausted-looking features. He really could kick them off the property or even have them arrested for trespassing, but still, she could not really fear him. His inadequacy shone through him like a kind of negative charisma. He would always be shoved to the back of a crowd, always shouted down in an argument, always picked last, forgotten, ignored in favor of those who were simply more vital, more vigorously attached to life.” This could show that he was treated poorly before the events of the games and books.

This was really fascinating and I appreciate all the effort that went into trying to psychoanalyze this...Absoloute delusional lunatic in a bunny suit. I do wanna bring up some things that might enhance the view of the metaphorical microscope though. Maybe you'll get some more info out of them?

- In the movie, when William stabs Vanessa, he has a fleeting look of shock on his face, but not sadness. And keyword, fleeting. Some part of him cares for what he considers his family, but not in a healthy or genuinely appreciative way.
- Silver Eyes has William described and compared to the less subtle kind of "nasty people", with the full description being "But then there was the other kind of petty tyrant, those who grew more spiteful with their small scraps of power, feeling more and more abused by the year-by family who did not appreciate them, by neighbors who slighted them in imperceptible ways, by a world that left them, somehow, lacking something essential. Before him stood a man who had spent so much of his life fighting like a cornered rat that he had taken on the mantle of bitter sadism as an integral part of himself." - The Silver Eyes, 226
- The Silver Eyes novel trilogy makes it clear a few times that William definitely enjoys hurting people, and especially if he can seemingly put on a show while doing it, faking being an empty costume while preparing to ambush a police officer and doing a little dance to an incapacitated Carlton before revealing his face and casually describing how springlock failures are brutally painful right before showing the scars as proof that he knows from expirence. There's a twisted desire to inflict fear and pain.
- The Fazbear's Frights novels, in a scene with his ghost trying to drag down two other spirits (don't ask), Jake feels William clawing at him and it's described as "being mauled and pummeled by a force filled with a never-ending need to inflict pain." (Blackbird, 168)

Another point from the psychopath list is that he is really willy nilly with safety, specifically for guests and employees. Springlock suits, springloaded endo jaws, slamming metal doors. Pizza Sim's got quite a few decorations that are specifically built for safety due to the lack thereof, even the whole idea of Risk rating is a giant red flag.
