I think the trick with Arch Enemy is that the melodies are in the guitars in unison with the harsh vocals. That makes it very melodic altogether. Alissa really can sing clean vocals. She did that a lot in her previous band The Agonist and actually on Arch Enemys new album. She do both styles on the song Handshake With Hell. Check it out, its amazing.

Random video to comment on: I never thought anyone could replace Angela as lead singer for Arch Enemy, but Alyssa easily won me over with her first performances. She's an amazing vocalist. And yes she also has a good "clear" singing voice. It's worth hearing.

Arch Enemy is unique in the sense that the guitars are the most melodic in the song, not the vocals. People get confused but once you lock into the guitars for melody, and vocals more like a distorted instrument, then it all works.

Ken, you should check out ‘Handshake with Hell’ and ‘Reason to Believe’ she displays her clean vocals along with her harsh vocals. From the melodic harmonies to screaming guitars. They are truly talented, they are just as tight live. She a a beautiful front woman and queen of metal 💙💙💙 I might also add ‘Nemesis’ from Wacken 2016! Love their power and energy!

I know it's a year old vid and you probably won't see, but.. melodic death metal

Melodic phrasing - primarily in the guitars in unison or counter point. Sometimes supported by keys either as a drone/atmosphere, unison, or very basic comping harmony.

Death - vocals (harsh screams typically halfway between black metal and death metal), tone (distortion, semi-heavy), speed juxtaposed by calmer slower sections but rarely breakdowns

Metal - vibes bro (lyrical content typical of dark imagery, metaphor heavy, independent, confrontational, critical of the world and society, personal)

At least that's my take on it.

I think a Hallmark of the style is the juxtaposition of the harsh vocals and the beautiful melodic phrasing. It's kind of the whole aesthetic.
