Top 5 Strategy Heavy Board Games - REVAMPED!!!

In part to celebrate making videos for nearly TWO years (and amazing years, at that), I wanted to completely revamp a very deserving one - for "games that involve a great deal of strategy. Not fast, not simple, but fun and challenging". Enjoy!

In addition to (mostly) rebuilding my top 5 strategy games list, I'm starting to retrospectively add links to BGG pages for each of the games I discuss in the video descriptions. As a compromise to not being able to have them in-video, there's no immediate spoilers, too!!

Thank you very much to all of you for an amazing two years and here's to having plenty more!

Axis and allies!! I played this once against an axis and allies veteran, I had the British and alone with that small army defeated the entire axis army which was in control by the veteran. He was annoyed and angry because he realised that all the strategy in the world couldn't defeated my dumb luck. I vowed never to play it again - even though I won, it was a boring affair and drove me mad that the stupid luck of the roll dictated the entire game. It's mind blowing that you put this over Caylus.

This is definitely a better list then the previous although I wouldn't think of 4 or 5 when I think of this category though but top 3 are great games!

I like that twilight struggle made both vid's honorable mentions.

The same comment I left on the first one fits here as well:

"Hardcore strategy games". Doesn't even mention World in Flames, Empires in Arms or Republic of Rome... cool cool cool, ok then

I've owned Twilight Imperium for many years but haven't played it yet. I really need to learn it. It looks really awesome!

I've been dying to try Twilight Imperium! I'll probably pick it up soon and make my group play. I also love Agricola! I'd be very curious what you think of Fire in the Lake. It's a 4 - player wargame from the COIN (COunter INsurgency) series on the Vietnam War. I really like the unique victory conditions for the 4 factions along with the unique operations and activities available to them. The turn order is randomized by cards, with the next card always revealed. A great strategy game in my opinion.

You should definately check out Civilization, and it's expansion that you can buy seperately but includes the whole game: Advanced Civilization. Although I never ever find time to play it. It's definately my favourite strategy game of all time. This game has got it all. Takes about 12 hours to complete tho...

Its a different sort of thing, but I LOVE Super Dungeon Explore, its much more of a squad based strategy game, but it applies.

I've been loving Eclipse as well.

(Adding to my earlier comment) I think BattleLore second edition (another game I've never played) is the one they considered the biggest killer of Axis & Allies.

That's perfect answered my question totally thanks man

there is only the one civilizations games but it comes with I believe two expansions and I've played both of them in my opinion they should come out with the first expansion with the game really refines a lot makes it more streamlined less clunky

have you heard of a game called strategy it's a capture the flag dual strategy game and it causes u to take risks because you can't see your opponents pieces it's also a risk because because you can't see your opponents pieces it could be a trap or a higher piece I loved it when I was 5 and it is really good anyway it's a suggestion. I love your vids your good at what your doing and keep up the good work

Very enjoyable. I'm afraid I've never had the chance to get out my copy of twilight imperium. :-(

hello, thank you so much for these videos. I am really attracted by the GamesOfThrone BoardGame (second edition), and i want to know if i should care about the extentions to have better fun and strategy or if i could just stick to the main game.

No "Here I Stand" and/or "Virgin Queen".... those are 6-players masterpieces! Cool video though!

I had two questions have you played civilizations?

my second question do you think eclipse is better than Twilight imperium? Not sure which one I should get. A lot of debate out there really feel like I can trust your opinion though.

To be honest these seem to be mid weight strategic games. Strategy heavy games to me would be 18XX, Empires In Arms, World In Flames, Virgin Queen and all the COIN GMT

Have you played "Seven Samurai", I think it goes by "Ikusa" now?

If you liked Game of Thrones, I think you might like it as well.

But then I'm running a campaign of Risk: Legacy, lol.

I'm surprised Axis & Allies made your list. Tom Vasel and his 2 henchmen (the goons of gaming!) are of the opinion that that was a good game in their college days, but has since been obsoleted. I've never played it, so I don't know. I think (testing my memory) they might've made reference to Small World and Nexus Ops. Have you played those? Regardless, war games aren't something they're very into, which is why their sister show HAMTAG has a niche. Thus, I don't put much stake in what Vasel thinks of Axis & Allies. An acquaintance offered to sell me A&A with an unplayed expansion for about $35, which I declined. Perhaps I should take a closer look at what the game offers.
