Elton John's original piano & vocal demo for this timeless hit, written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin in 1969. Elton's diary entry, 27th October 1969: "In the end I did nothing today... wrote a new song called 'Your Song'." Taupin had written the words one morning at breakfast; egg and coffee stains can still be seen on the now framed original copy.
Demo recorded at Dick James Studios.

Imagine the people from the studios listening to this for the first time, before anyone had even the slighest idea who Elton John or Bernie Taupin are. They must been so silent and taken by it I imagine. The discovery must have been tremendous.

After so many years of listening to Your Song, I still can't get over the beauty of this song, this voice, this piano, these lyrics. For me, it's the most beautiful song of the 20th century.

Just reflects even in its demo form a year before its release in 1970 what a world class talent was emerging with the Elton & Bernie collaboration - one of the rare classics that transcends time.

Listening to this, you can tell it's the music that makes the star... Elton wasn't the rock star type in any sense back then, and probably record execs had a hard time trying to figure out how to sell him to the masses, but reckoned inmediately that this is timeless music. And of course in a couple of years he was selling millions of records and became probably the biggest 70s icon.

"Excuse me forgetting, but these things I do / You see I've forgotten if they're green, or they're blue / Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean / Yours are the sweetest eyes, I've ever seen."

Bernie wrote that sht on a napkin? Over eggs and coffee? Wow.

Interesting to hear the evolution of a song from demo to release. Kind of like a snapshot in time, because we all know that Elton never plays it exactly the same way twice, so it's always evolving

It's weird how he sang it in a more wispy voice in the demo. If you've ever heard an interview with Elton, he is great at imitating voices. And so he probably was trying out a style he thought would have the best reception. I'm glad the finished product was a lower timbre.

I never heard this version..how sweet the vocals and his rendition..great as today the song is..independent of who´s singing it...
