Cats recognise their owners my their scent more than faces. Mine sniffs my clothes, stationeries, footwear etc., then licks them & sometimes press his nose & smoothens his moustache. He has an uncanny knack of knowing when someone is going to be sick that when he sits near other pets & keeps watching them with a look that sonething is wrong with you then I get alerted to check whoever got his attention. He also can know when I am deep in thoughts or when Iam upset, his usual response is he will climb up & lay next to me touching his body closer to me. He is very different from many other cats I came across. The day I first pet him as a stray kitten outside the temple I visit he simply tried to climb up & gently touched my cheek with his paws & was constantly meowed which literally felt his asking me to take him home with me. His guardian who was feeding him told me that he loved humans more than cats. Lucky to have his company.

My mum's cats grew up with me in the house for their first 1.5 years, then I moved. I hadn't been there for a year, then returned for a visit. They recognised me almost immediately.

My friends cat remembers by scent bc when they took her from her foster mother they took a blanket which smelt like her foster mother. They forgot about it for a bit but then gave it to her. She sniffed it and then rubbed her head even going under it. So cute 🥹

After a several years apart my cat didn't recognise my face or scent and was hissing at me etc when I came home to my mom's place. Then when I called the cat's name in the specific way I always did before, she instantly knew who I was and was all over me purring and asking for belly rubs. So her auditory memory was the only one that worked after a 3 year spell apart.

They also learn by Classical Conditioning (quite obviously) as someone in the comments mentioned their cat can recognize their footsteps.
Cats can also recognize humans by their scent

I had a Russian Blue, he was about 18 years old, there was always someone home and he was an indoor outdoor cat, but as a musician I had to leave on tour sometimes up to two months, every time I got home, he would ignore me for a while, then just outa the blue he’d walk over and bite me in the leg and walk off, that little shit, I miss that crazy cat though 😢
