TD Bank made a $5, 000 mistake on my boyfriend's account that resulted in a large negative balance. If we didn't have a rainy day fund we would have fallen behind on bills and been completely screwed with no money for 6 weeks; his paychecks were direct deposit so they were getting eaten up by the negative balance and I don't make enough to cover all of our bills on my own. Having a savings turned that crisis into an inconvenience, because it allowed us the ability to still pay our bills while everything got sorted. We would have had to borrow from family and use my credit card to keep the lights on and I'm so relieved we didn't have to go into debt because of this.
