Turkmenistan president wants ‘Gates of Hell’ inferno extinguished.
The place, also known as "Door to Hell," is located in the desert approximately 160 miles north of the capital, Ashgabat, and has developed a following among the country's few visitors.
According to Turkmen news website Turkmenportal, the infernal hole is 190 feet wide and 70 feet deep and was developed in 1971 as a result of a Soviet Union gas drilling collapse.
The president finally wants the fire extinguished after more than 40 years due to the fire's bad impact on the environment and local residents' health.
He has pleaded with government officials to "find a way to put out the fire."
