Turkmenistan's Gates Of Hell Explained! (Darvaza Gas Crater)
Показать описание
Hello Nerds! Welcome back to my channel!
Very recently, Turkmenistan, a quiet Central Asian country decided to shut down its hugely famous tourist attraction: The Darvaza Gas Crater, more popularly known as the Gates of Hell or Gateway to Hell!
The inferno in the crater has been continuously burning for more than 50 years, without signs of dying down! The Gates of Hell crater is located in the village of Darvaza in the middle of the Karakum desert, around 260kms from Turkmenistan's capital, Asghabat.
The crater was formed after the ground caved in, hitting a pocket of methane gas, during the drilling process, to obtain natural oil, in 1971. To prevent an environmental catastrophe, geologists decided to ignite the crater on fire, thinking it would burn out in a few weeks.
Fast forward to the present day, 50 years later, the fire still burns, creating a spectacular sight to the eyes, especially during the nighttime!
