My goats have learned “go to the barn” “get in the truck” “let’s go to the trailer”. They are so smart and sensitive. My Husband was hospitalized for three weeks, and our little doe was inconsolable, as he had never been away for more than two or three nights before. Every evening I would put him on Speaker phone to talk with her and she would perk up. FaceTime didn’t work though (I don’t think they see screens the same way we do, or at least not phones!). As our girl was a feral orphan and we couldn’t find her a companion she really bonded to us and came everywhere with us, slept in the bedroom, so we were her only little “herd”. I need more goats… two just isn’t enough but it’s a start.

They're more moody than my dogs. One change in their routine even down to who gets pets first vs last is noticable. SMH

As always, great info. I personally think goats are the smartest most complex four legged animal. I tell people all the time that our goats truly love us and their response is usually, "May dog/cat loves me too", but I'm sure you understand that it's just not the same. We have a wether right now who is 11 months old and would rather be a "people". Depression is an issue with him and he wants to hang with us rather than the other goats, but as he grows bigger he is finding his place.

I’m so stocked. My first string of pack goats were born last night. All ready for bottle feeding.

Mark, I have had goats for almost 22 yrs. I have found that everything you say about goats is so true. I have never seen you say anything that wasn't true about goats. You have some very goat knowledge about goats.

I have Kiko goats, and one dairy goat. They all free range. I have seen where the herd will head out but the young kids will stay behind. For the first couple of weeks I will see one of the mums stay behind to "babysit" and I have even seen my dairy goat take that role on occasion. As the kids get older some will go with the herd, some will stay back. So long as there are at least 2 kids staying behind, or one kid and an older sister, they are fine. My dairy goat is the exception and will stay behind by herself on occasion. But she is accustomed to being by herself from her previous owner. She does enjoy being in a herd, but sometimes she just doesn't want to leave the barn area.

My grandparents had two lady goats for years who were inseperable and when the older one died the younger goat got so sad it passed shortly after. They just cant be alone. Theyre very intuitive and sensitive animals

Why bottlefeed? My goats have never had a bottle and still follow me everywhere... we go on hikes and they like to do tricks... I would say that if you spend time with them they follow.

I notice how static your goats are in the cold weather. Here in QLD Australia our goats never stand still. I actually thought you were standing in front of a green screen with a photo of goats in the background:) Our goats are always active unless they’re chilling to chew cud. I also appreciate your honesty about handling them. New goat owners, just like new parents, can lose their cool and get rough. The key is time, patience, knowledge and experience that teaches us to put our ego aside, and work with our animals as they understand the world, instead of how we preconceive the world. You’re a good teacher, mate. And I very much appreciate your input. Regards from Armstrong Beach, Australia.
