A film that is part martial arts epic, part philosophical treatise and part love story all at once. It will surprise few to learn that Ang Lee named this movie as one of the primary influences on CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Before becoming a filmmaker, King Hu kicked around for a number of years, studying widely in many different disciplines. When he began making martial-arts films for Shaw Brothers studios he infused the action with the movements and physical grace of Chinese opera. This was to prove extremely influential within the genre. A TOUCH OF ZEN shows King Hu working in an entirely personal register, not especially mindful of commercial considerations - so much so that the film bombed at the box office. Today it appears to us like a film far ahead of its time, and his masterpiece. WInner of the top technical honors at Cannes. Newly restored.
