Our group still does drafts and we also play a lot of Commander. You bring up some really valid points that Wizards needs to upgrade prizes because people spend a lot of money on airfare, hotels, meals, and not to mention ADMISSION!!!! I finally made a new standard deck!! ( no cash spent traded in cards) The last time I made one to play at my LGS was in 2018. I plan on playing in The Spotlight Series in Georgia in January.
I'm happy to see standard get some backing by WOTC.

YouTuber PleasantKenobi was talking about getting more interest for Standard. Is this going to be people's focus for 2025? Our playgroup shifts a lot, where we play Mtg, DnD, nWod, and back again. I also wonder if competitive players check out Canadian Highlander. I've watched some of those games, and they have amazingly powerful magic and support the idea of proxies.

Congrats on 25k Moxman!! Well earned. I think Standard struggles because it's 1v1 and people are used to playing 3, 4, 5 and even 6 player games of commander and like it. With so many players having Commander Decks, I find it hard for them to set them aside or even deconstruct them to build some Standard Decks to play. Yes the games are quicker.. but it just feels like an uphill struggle.

Standard is something they need to work out, I love the idea of better prize support from wizards and I mean cash not cardboard

it ain't goin anywhere. too many people are priced out of standard in paper. They can play online cuz of wild cards etc and they manage to do it without giving hasbro/wotc a dime in the process. I don't see standard in paper becoming popular ever again so long as the prices stay the way they are (that includes prices of sealed). Doesn't matter how much they try to promote it, the format isn't ever coming back to its former glory in paper. And the fact that the pool is so diluted in sealed product to even pull the needed cards, it just makes it more expensive since need to buy more packs/boxes to actually pull the needed cards, keeping even more people out of the format. The prize support is definitely not there to entice people either, not like it used to be when standard was the primary format. Modern already bad enough in its pricing to keep people out. Standard used to be the affordable competitive format. It is no longer affordable.

5 - 6 sets a year makes it super expensive to "keep" up with standard, sure with a 3 year rotation there is some card stability, BUT with so many releases your deck could get out dated every 6 weeks...

When I came back to magic for war of the spark and I expected standard to be the big format at the lgs. Then I had to learn how commander worked.

Commander is the format I play with friends. I've only played kitchen table a handful of times and standard it's been a couple of years.

Agreed. They want to make money, but nobody is going to buy boxes of new sets if a format like Commander is the top format because it doesn't incentivize it. They have to push standard if they want that revenue. I think lack of revenue it's partly why they introduced the universe beyond.

The average casual play couldn’t care less about what goes on with the pro tour BS.

They can get Standard back on track, but i’ll have to be without the current batch of Commander players. They’ll have to push Standard onto new players looking to get into the game. And that’ll be more difficult as there is a large amount of good competition for the new player wanting to get into TCGs.
Gone are the days when Magic was the undisputed king of that world. For decades Magic had no real competition, the vast majority of tcgs either were not very good or were mostly unsupported. This is no longer the case. There are now a bunch of younger tcgs that are very well made and supported.
WOTC can get Standard back on track, but it’ll never be the juggernaut it once was.

Wizards is their own worst enemy when it comes to standard but there’s only 2 answers.

Spend a lot of money to play the format or for WotC to reprint current standard sets into oblivion so everyone has the option of buying in cheap and getting lucky on packs or having single prices decrease.

I want to see standard come back with a vengeance! I love Commander!!! But standard is literally the life force that drives the game forward. Without a competitive standard format, and new cards coming in with new abilities and effects, other formats will grow stale and predictable.

Commander will be a much healthier format if they push Standard as the main driver for game design moving forward. An extended Standard season structure and good game design will have a much better impact on Commander than the "made-for-Commander products."
