We had a big Basset hound when I was really little. He was the dog in the neighborhood everyone knew and loved. This was in the early 1980s, when you'd let your dog run around outside with the kids and he'd come back for naps and meals. He used to lie down in the middle of the street in our neighborhood. Everyone knew to look for him. People coming home from work would either have to go around him or wait until he decided he wanted to get up. He wouldn't even respond to honking -- he was king of the neighborhood. He was a good dog. Giant ears.

My mom's best friend down the street had a female Basset and so our Basset and her Basset had the cutest puppies. We kept one, which was nice because soon after our beloved dog got cancer and passed away. My parents were so distraught. Seven children were living at home (8 altogether... one was married). I was the youngest. My dad was chief of the fire department, so we took his body out to the forest across from a small, municipal fire department out in the country that my Dad knew about, and buried there. We had a ceremony and my dad put up a stone with his name. My dad never cried, but he cried when our Basset was laid to rest.

When we came home, lots of people from the neighborhood were gathered on our driveway and in our yard. People brought food, and some helped my mom make tea, coffee, etc., and they brought buckets of ice with beer -- I distinctly remember that because my 14-year-old brother snuck two beers and got rip-roaring drunk (and he got in trouble). People stayed all day into the night. It was a beautiful summer day, and I remember the fireflies sparkling and the smell of trees and grass. He would have loved that day.
