The Wild West is one of the most iconic time periods in pop culture, making it ironic that it's also one of the most misunderstood. Hollywood paints it as a time of gunslingers, adventure, and cowboy heroes, but as often is the case, the reality is a bit more lackluster. While it was a rather violent place with high murder rates, this can be misleading as even one murder in a small population size can produce seemingly astronomical murder rates, essentially enhancing outliers in data. The truth is, the "Wild West" was a rather calm and boring time where people were much more focused on getting to the next day than robbing trains or saving damsels in distress. But while the dangers painted by Hollywood and dime novels are often over exaggerated and glamorized, that doesn't mean the region and time period was void of danger! So join me back in time to learn about the real history and dangers of the American Wild West!

I feel like wild Western life is second only to pirate life as the most overhyped and romanticized historical state of existence.

Joke aside, I think a lot of people confuse the difference between an Outlaw and a Cowboy

Fun fact: The people that made the biggest bucks during the gold rsh wasn't the miners. It was people that sold the pickaxes, the food, the rope the booze and of course the the good old brothel owners. There where so many brothels...

Another danger for cowboys not mentioned was the threat of rustlers. While you didn't get paid much, the cows are worth a tidy sum. So there was always the chance of someone attacking you to take control of the herd to sell somewhere else.

20:57 Nice that you actually named the dead body that people went to see.
Most insane part of that is the body was so mummified and painted it was put with other mannequins and his human past was completely forgotten about. He ended up as a prop of a hanging man on a tv set.. and it wasn't until his arm accidentally came off, revealing gore underneath did anyone realize.

I've always found it interesting that the iconic "Wild West" was portrayed in places like Arizona, California, & New Mexico when the actual, real-life wild stuff took place in States like Kansas & Missouri.

There were thousands and thousands of jokes for 'one small spook' but "...they hit the pentagon"' combined with the look on the cow's face was probably the best bit I've heard on this amazing channel.

The whole point of western movies is that when the big gunfights, robberies, Indian raid, stuff like that happened it was memorable. There’s a channel called Life in the 1800s where they have interviews with survivors of Indian attacks and robberies. It might not have happened everyday to everyone, but when it did happen it was talked about.

Weird how it's only been 3 months but it seems like the quality has drastically improved without losing any of the vibes

This is a great example of how tales get churned and turned over time and when the real facts and context is stripped away, it all seems so magical and cool. Humanity is only now (as in, within a little over the last century) able to "properly" capture events in real time by means of video recordings, and even then now we still have to deal with stories being manipulated into misdirection arguably even faster than before.
