Fotini Markopoulou - Why is the Universe So Beautiful?

Why do scientists use the word beauty to describe the universe? Gaze at the universe with a knowing eye. There's beauty on every level—simplicity and regularity, even a kind of grace—from the smallest sub-atomic particles to the largest clusters of galaxies. The universe is a masterpiece.

Damn, Robert dropped that line smooth as mother's butter. Well played, and quite true.

“When I look at you I see beauty.” Spitting mad game

Is cancer, famine, murder, rape, parasites, predation, poverty, viruses, pain, sorrow, depression, insanity, injustice and war beautiful? Take the whole damn thing into consideration. Just because you think roses and the stars in the sky, or some mathematical equations are subjectively beautiful doesn't make the entirety beautiful. The majority of the cosmos that matters to sentient beings is ugly and appalling.

Beauty is symmetry, or special symmetry like the Fibonacci series. Faces, horses, trees, crystals, a bach cantata, ....the most beautiful of these have the most accurate Fibonacci proportions. Deeper mathematical symmetries underly subatomic models.

Maybe you need to talk to Dr Sabina Hossenfelder to get a counter augment on this question.

I enjoyed the subtle sexual innuendos just as much the inquisitive scientific inquiries in this conversation ❤

The two *_greatest_* and *_most beautiful_* brainchildren of the human brain that blow our minds are math and music, especially classical and especially Beethoven’s. 🎵🎵 🎶

"When I look at you, I know beauty." Awkward pause.... followed by excellent response. "So if they are short/compact, powerful..." STOP FLIRTING LITTLE OLD MAN. Let the women speak.

"beauty is truth, truth, beauty".

LOL, this is what happens when you ask a mathematician what beauty is.

Marh can give lots of beautiful equations but when applying them to physics they may not be true beauty is relative

To many thing in the universe that are not beautiful, so that makes the universe partially beautiful.

But she's just talking about one type of mathematics. There's thousands of kinds of math. Are they all beautiful, or just the one you have picked that works best for you?

All the visible images that created men observe within their minds come from invisible thoughts called our Creator. All images are formed from the patterns that very tiny flickers of light ( particles that quantum scientists talk about ) that form bigger and bigger patterns until we can observe a bigger image.

Sorry, not one of his better interviews. Not very insightful. Boring. If she spoke more about quantum gravity it might have been more interesting.

But what is beauty? Is it truly subject to the eye of the beholder. After looking at images from various sources and material reference books and magazines. It is clear to me that the complexity of our Universe in all its wondrous levels of being from the vary vast and timeless distances to the tiniest of particles that make up the whole picture will never cease to amaze me. I will not pretend to understand any of the science behind what is out there in the world that brings beauty to the everyday of my life. But in all honesty there is an even darker side to all this beauty. In the physical world in which we all live and reside in. Trying to share resources and space for those resources we come across the dark beauty when those resources start to dwindle downward. But at the same time it forces other's too search for new ways of doing things. Like walking into class and asking the student body for solutions for this and for that. To peer into the abyss of imagination and understanding and come up with a unified field theory for quantum theory. So that we can break the laws and do all sorts of wondrous things. I could be wrong though and regret it if this beautiful puzzle were too ever be solved. What horrors would be seen? Would I want to see what is on the other side of unification? Would it really change anything that I do or understand? Would it open doors to other times and spaces? Other Universes? Past or present lives lived by me? Or future lives that will have been lived by various other versions of myself? Would this me know and realize it when it did? Could be wrong though. But the facets of beauty are all relative to the light that shines upon it.
