You can see what happened here. The 911 was told to back up to the starting point and there he forgot to put it in drive at the start of the race.

It turned into his own race to either find the back exit, or to drive through a fence to reach the road home, out of there.
Who cares about his jacket and the house keys, he ain't going back.
