It is derived from the Latin words “Ab” which means “Away, from, off” and “tenere” which means “hold”
So, the Latin word- “abstinere” became “abstain” in the late middle English

The word abstain means “restrain oneself from doing or enjoying something.”
E.g. For him to lose weight, he must abstain from all sugary treats

To get the job and stay employed, Rita had to abstain from taking alcohol.
