As a vet tech, THANK YOU for making the distinction between this disease and canine parvovirus!

Pediatric PA, I’ve seen a lot of Fifth disease for the past few weeks. Kids usually recover well from it. Typically kid will have a fever, the next day get a pink rash on the cheeks, then the next day a rash that kind of looks like an allergic reaction on the tops of the arms and forearms, the chest and back, sometimes the thighs. It’s spread by respiratory droplets and has a somewhat long incubation period, so one sibling may have it and the other sibling not get it for over a week.

IDK how much this woman is paid but she deserves a raise and is the only reason I'm subscribed.

I had that during 2020, it started on a eye lid and moved down my face to my collar bone. It ITCHED so bad, touching it burned, cold felt nice, I covered it in Shea butter and drank Yarrow tea. One cup of tea in the morning and the itching and burning stayed at bay for the day.

Oh my god, I had this in fifth grade and my parents refused to believe it was real because they hadn't read the notices from the school saying there was an outbreak until I made them call the school

I got this actually a few months ago. I’m a teenager, however, I work with kindergarteners on a regular basis, so I picked it up from them. It was just kind of embarrassing but it didn’t cause too much discomfort.

The fluffy pens should definitely be expensed, or even become paid actors

We're STILL RECOVERING FROM THE PANDEMIC!

It’s not called fifths disease bc it’s the fifth most common rash in kids. It’s a historical name that we used to categorize rashes before we knew what caused them. It’s a list of six and includes measles (first disease) and rubella (third disease)

Parvovirus 19 replicates in the progenitor cells of red blood cells. In pregnant people this can lead to fetal anemia which can be deadly for the fetus. In people who are already low on red blood cells (think hemolytic disease like hereditary spherocytosis, thalassemia), this can lead to aplastic crisis (as in no red blood cell synthesized at all)

Oh! I had fifth disease in elementary school. My skin stayed splotchy for weeks, and for years after whenever I got hot it would look just like it did when I had the rash.

My son had that when he was maybe 8 or 9 (he’s an adult now) and his cheeks looked like something from the cartoons: big magenta moons on both brown chubby cheeks. Never seen that before, haven’t since!
