The Glorious Revolution, also known as the Revolution of 1688 (in Irish: An Réabhlóid Ghlórmhar, in Scots: Glorious Revolution, in Scottish Gaelic: Rèabhlaid Ghlòrmhor, and in Welsh: Chwyldro Gogoneddus), was the overthrow of King James II of England (James VII of Scotland) by a coalition of English Parliament members and the Dutch stadtholder, William III of Orange. William's successful invasion of England with a Dutch fleet and army led to his ascension to the throne as King William III of England. Together with his wife, Mary II of England, who was James's daughter, they approved the Bill of Rights in 1689.
