In this new UMX video, we travel to Barcelona to learn more about road safety and how speed limits can be suggested through well-planned road design. We meet Axel Rimbaud, a road safety specialist, who will explain the safe system approach, a concept coming from the Netherlands and Sweden which emphasises taking every part of the road system into account to minimise the risk of crashes. In this video we will see that every road should be designed with a function, which determines the appropriate speed of the road. We will illustrate every type of road with examples in Barcelona, and see how, when well-designed, the speed of a road can naturally adjust to its function.

📢 CORRECTION NOTICE: Hey! Quick heads up. When talking about exchange pathways, the main risk is lateral crashes between cars, as at a speed of 50 km/h a crash will be lethal for a pedestrian. Sorry about that!

It is unbelievable how we, as a society, accept the deaths and injuries as a result of traffic accidents. Sell somebody a cigarette and you get sued, sell somebody a 3, 5 ton death machine and you get a pat on the back. Somehow it feels like there are double standards being applied there. 🤔
