What to do for Your Cats Before Going on Vacation

What do to when going on vacation? Here are a few rules and some extra tips to follow before leaving your feline friends.

Some great ideas here. Especially about blocking doors open. We just installed 2 indoor security cameras that we can monitor with our phones anywhere we are. I don't think I could stand being away from my little guys for a whole week. I can't wait to get back home when I just run out to buy groceries. One of our male cats (Henry) is so attached to my wife that everytime she drives away, he howls like the world is coming to an end. Cats -- what joy they bring into our lives!

An important item is missing: vet information! It is important for your sitter to know how to reach you and what vet you use, should there be an emergency or illness.

Cats don’t often eat as much when you’re gone so having your sitter monitor food and water consumption along with cat box activity, to compare to what you establish as regular/normal, is helpful.

I'm a first-time guardian of a 5 week-old kitten. I need to be away next weekend and have been considering the alternatives: taking him with us or leaving him at home with someone dropping by to feed him. I was anxious about leaving him, but just this morning I've noticed how much more active and independent he is compared to his first week at home. So I'll leave him with a sweaty tunic of mine and simple instructions for my neighbours. Thank you for this.

Good tips. Though I take my cats always with me on vacation. A week ago I was 6 days with them away. They had fun exploring the holiday apartment and going on walks with me in the new excited area.

The camera and not travelling for more than a week, I think those might be a bit excessive and they are both remedied with a cat sitter who spends an hour or two being with your cat or who even lives in your house during that time. Other than that, excellent ideas!

The last point isn’t mandatory OFCOURSE they’ll miss you but I went away for 3 weeks had my cousins go in twice a day to feed clean litter and spend a hour with them, they missed us but did really well I wouldn’t recommend more than a month risk of them forgetting you and changing personality.

The worst thing you can do is make them move from their home. Keep them in their own environment and get someone (family or friend) to go in twice a day you’ll be fine cats are quite independent, also depends on the breed

good tips I'm going on vacation soon and I'm gonna miss my cat! I will do all of these except for the security cameras because we can just ask our neighbors that are watching my cat for a picture or video to make sure he's okay. It's only 6 days were going. Very helpful video

Whenever i am just about to leave them for one or two days, i notice all my 5 cats always refused to leave my bedroom. But whenever i decided to cancel the trip, all of them were always gone instantly. Like they know ....
