This is a Motormouth first look at the all-new Toyota Crown full-size sedan that replaces the Avalon. Say hello to the newest model in the Toyota lineup, the Crown. A historic nameplate last sold in North America in the early 1970s. The Crown has long been the panicle of Toyota excellence in Japan since it was first introduced in 1955. Well, Toyota has replaced the outgoing Avalon full-size Camry based sedan with this crossover based sedan. The Crown sits up higher than a sedan, it’s height is roughly 10cm or almost 4-inches higher than the Camry. It is also roughly 10cm or 4-inches longer than a Camry. With wheel sizes ranging from 19-21-inches, plus body cladding, you can see the roots of the Toyota TNGA-K platform used in other crossovers. All but the top Platinum model get a 2.5L hybrid system, similar to the RAV4 and Lexus NX and Lexus RX models with an eCVT. Horsepower for this model has not been stated but look to the Lexus NX and RX base hybrid models as a guide. All Crown models are AWD but what is exciting is the Platinum model gets the new Hybrid Max system with a turbo 2.4L 4-cylinder and a sold 340 hp with a RWD bias AWD system, using the new 6-speed automatic transmission and what Toyota calls a rear eAxle electric motor. All models get normal, eco and sport modes but the Platinum gets sport +. The hybrid max system will also be used in the new Lexus RX, so it’s obvious that Toyota does look at the Crown as a top model. The platinum is the Crown or the Crown models with standard with adaptive suspension to go along with the better performance an eAxle goodies. The Crown comes with standard power driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats are available, plus a mixture of cloth and Softex on the base model, all other models get leather. The top two trims also get the fixed pano roof. Infotainment is covered with a standard 12.3-inch screen with over the air updates, plus all models get wireless ACP and AA. The base model gets a -speaker stereo and the top two trims will get the upgraded JBL system. The Crown comes with Toyota’s safety sense 3.0 including blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment. The Crown comes in three trims, the XLE, Limited and Platinum, the top Platinum trim gets the two-tone loom with a different coloured roof.
Fuel economy is 6.2L/100km or 38MPG for the base hybrid and 8.4L/100km or 28MPG for the top Platinum with the 340hp system.
Pricing has not been announced and the Crown goes on sale this fall

The name itself makes sense in the sedan lineup as it is all related to regency.

Camry => kanmuri (crown in Japanese)=> Crown
Corolla => little crown (in Latin) => Crown
Crown => Crown.

So 4 of the auto channels I subscribe to uploaded a video about this new Crown within seconds of each other, and I found myself automatically gravitating to this one! This showed me that Motormouth has now become my go to channel for anything automotive, despite the fact I've been subbed to other automotive channels for much longer; thanks guys and keep up the great work! As for the Crown, I want to reserve final judgement until I see it in the metal but from the pics it looks oddly proportioned, though I do think the interior is a big improvement for Toyota.

I would love a car like this. I have a 2021 RDX which I love but I always enjoyed driving a sedan but the newer cars like the Avalon were too low to the ground for my old bones. This car is right up my alley.

Hybrid powertrain, all wheel drive, and that gorgeous body and tech?!
If they had made this as a hatchback/sportback rather than sedan, itd 100% be my next car

I think this is a homerun, guys. It looks amazing and I love that it's a cross between a sedan and SUV, much like the Ford Mach-E!

Test drove this last week. It’s great inside and the ride is super. The back seat is roomy and the hatch space is great.

In a sea of suv's, it's refreshing to see A car comeback! Very sharp yet stately with a beautiful dash and ergonomics. Bravo! Toyota. Dyeing for you guy's to test the newly returned Crown!

Thanks for bringing this to us and for being first with it. I think its a terrific idea - we all want more useful vehicles and a lifted, all wheel drive hatchback gives Toyota something unique - like an A5. The hybrid powertrains make it appealing as I think everyone is fed up with over-consuming and over-polluting ICE vehicles. As for the name? It's not offensive but, as you and Zack point out, it's also not known enough to be recognized.

I personally love the idea of a sedan that sits abit higher. I think the current Camry sits too low for going through deep snow on unplowed roads(why isn't there a awd hybrid Camry?). It may set the trend back towards sedans(different generations, like different car styles), or it may struggle to compete against the larger trucks of the suv style crossover.
Zack may be on to something about the Crown becoming a sub brand. When you think about it: the Corrolla name plate is already doing this. Does this mean the Rav4 will become a Camry Cross in the future?

I think it's interesting. I definitely saw the BZ4X influence. But, since it's replacing the Avalon nameplate, what does that mean for pricing? It'll be very interesting to see what Toyota reveals about it later on in the year.

Just saw one of these at a Burnaby grocery store parking lot - red & black. Those things are HUGE!

Looks kinda cool. Love the hatch batch, much more versatile than a regular trunk. I like the grill, but not the two tone color scheme. I'd get it in black, which is also quite common in Japan.
