Worked for MS for 12 years, moved on to fighting cybercrime and we were playing around with ML-AI back in 2013. I unplugged in 2015 and live on my farm. 🤗.

@davidbombal
Fascinating point, David! The energy consumption for AI development is becoming a massive factor that often flies under the radar. It's almost poetic that as we push the boundaries of artificial intelligence, we’re turning to one of the oldest, most reliable energy sources—nuclear power—to keep up. It makes you wonder if this is just the beginning of a broader shift in energy infrastructure to support AI and other tech innovations.

It also raises an interesting question: How sustainable is this in the long run? Are we going to see more collaborations between tech companies and the energy sector, especially with AI's hunger for power growing? Exciting but definitely something to keep an eye on!

Same power plant that once had a meltdown

And they failed to let us know that this specific power plant suffered a failure which was extremely dangerous for the surrounding area

I'm a Pennsylvania resident near the Three Mile Island Plant that they plan to re-open. The part nobody is mentioning is that the plant was originally decommissioned for nearly becoming a Chernobyl 2 situation. Locals are not happy about it as this plant sits right on the Susquehanna River which is a major river moving through Pennsylvania and its main watersheds.

so Sam Altman is apparently a significant early investor in HELION ENERGY (Early fusion energy startup) and turns out microsoft signed a deal to get 50 megawatts from them by 2028, deal signed in May 2023. Now OpenAI is changing to for profit. Where there is smoke, there is a fire going on. sounds nice and sustainable, but actual looks like a money ticket frankly.

The plant that they plan to revamp and reopen was the scene of an INES Level 5 meltdown back in the 1970s that there's a whole Netflix series on (albeit a woefully inaccurate one) which is of course precisely why it was decommissioned. Yeah, not exactly something to be proud of, and they're going to need to implement much stricter safeguards now than they had then for the reopening to make sense.

I'm thinking about it and I think it could be beneficial if they're willing to ramp their demand up and down to balance the load. Sell them power cheap during overproduction and buy energy from them during high demand.

Nuke power is great. No sarcasm. It's clean energy. Power plant safety in most counties is solid.

if they try to automate and replace jobs, there will be less people spending money and it will actually crash the economy.

This is very interesting. I expect microsoft to grow quite a bit from this.
