There's actually a plane that was created specifically to cut coiled spills to light candles etc before the days of matches, there's a couple of YouTube vids around on how to make them.

I was just fuckin' around a couple weeks ago doing exactly this. My bandmate walked in and paid me $50 to spray-can poly a few of em for his Warhammer terain map for bridge cables, smokestacks, etc. He didn't want to spend 7k for me to make a game table, though 😢 cheap bastard! Still, 50 bucks for 10m of "work" was pretty sweet!
