Ep 9: Food, Booze & Gadgets

Filmed in November, right before Adventure 10: 'A Few Tricks in the Frozen Backcountry'. Published now for your enjoyment. Food, booze, gadgets and more for winter excursions. Things to think about while you're packing. Some of the types of food I gravitate towards. Why I never cook my just-add-water-meals in their packaging, and what I do instead.

Some stuff I show off: The Big Blue 28W Solar Charger. The Silverant 400ml titanium bottle. Mountain House meals and how to pack them. My Birch Burl Kuksa cup. My personal fire kit. Hunters orange, and why to keep it in stock. I complain some more about the Appalachian Trail and why I don't consider it anything serious. Boundless Voyage 1.4L Titanium Backpacking Kettle. BCB British Water Bottle & NATO Crusader Cup. The flexibility of taters. A whole big discussion about Mr. Booze, hootch, Kentucky Bourbon and how to carry it in the woods.

Okay now I need to know where you grew up . I grew up around Grundy Virginia and attended a 2 room school and never had running water at home and never saw a n indoor bathroom in a house until I moved to Indiana in 1966 . I carried water from a well or spring and by the time I was 9 it was my job to make sure the wood was chopped and that we had coal in the house for the heating stove . Those are the days I still love and dream about .

Great content, great presentation! More practical information than a lot of the youtube "camping gear guys" spread across ten episodes. And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that likes to have a drink while filming. Subscribed.

Top tip: use coffee bags. You won't regret using them. I save two used bags to remake another cup.

Thanks for sharing.

Anyone that would buy a bottle of booze just to have the bag. We must be related. Love it. Great video. We carry a lot of the same gear. All my electronics are usb always carry at least 10 watts of solar. And a fishing reel

Great tips! Also split the freeze dried meals into two separate bags because most are two serving packets. How often to you hike in Georgia? Now following 690!

Hello, this is my first time visiting your channel.
I think 🤔 it's pretty cool.
I have to say I do the same thing in the grocery store when I'm buying something like peanuts or anything. Actually, I try and make sure the container is reusable. For camping stuff or crafts or just more seasonings. You gave me an idea for my homemade fire starters they are round. I used the facial pads that you used and dipped into wax, but I did just have them in a sandwich bag, but you're right, so I'm going to use the container my bouillon cubes came in, its the perfect size.
I didn't even think of that. Thank you for the ideas. It's super cool. I'd really like to see your adventures, so I think I'll subscribe to your channel. You just really seem like an awesome guy.
I mean, come on, only nice guys buy a bottle of bourbon just for the bag, lol 😂😅
Thank you for sharing. I found this video very informative.
KEEP ADVENTURING
GOD BLESS YOU
🤗HUGS🤗

I have trouble understanding you logic on moving freeze dried meal to a ziplock bag or using your cup to "cook" it in.

First of all you say, i want the crusader cup because it is capable of xyz. I agree, but just because you use the bag in this instance for task x doesn't negate yz and x in the future.

Second of all that mountain house bag is a much more reliable container than the sandwich bag if you decide to repurpose it. Water carry for instance.

3 you would need to clean the mug to some degree.

4 your creating more garbage and spending more money in the process.

5 If for what ever reason you don't get around to eating that meal, you have turned a 30yr shelf life into maybe weeks.

6 if you don't care about 5 you could preopen the bag to get pretty close to the same pack size.
