Simplicity is usually what comes to your mind when you think about the Dalai Lama. Sure, you think enlightened, tolerant, and compassionate, but when it comes to the diet of one of the world’s most renowned spiritual leaders, simplicity is what it’s all about.

Traditionally, the diet of Tibetan monks consists of Tsampa (made from barley), dairy products, and even Yak butter tea, but the Dalai Lama hasn't lived in Tibet since the '50s.

Has being the Dalai Lama and living away from Tibet for decades now changed his diet over the years? Let's take a look at what the Dalai Lama really eats.

the Dalai Lama and the heads of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism are in fact very discouraging of eating meat. It’s only “allowed” if the animal was not killed strictly for your sake, and if needed for poor health. The Dalai Lama has strictly condemned eating of meat at dharma centers and festivals and encouraged vegetarianism as possible for students and society at large

In Tibet weather is very harsh and hardly any vegetation grows there due to high altitude and very cold climate. Tibet, Siberia, Alaska, and Greenland these places people have no choice but to eat meat to survive.

Meat, milk, and eggs aren't food, it's violence.
Animal abuse isn't ahimsa.
It's ahimsa to treat animals and everyone with kindness, respect and let them live. It's their planet.

Wait! What? At 2:15 you say ‘rebellion’? You surely mean invasion or annexation by China?

01:00 being a monk he eats meat. Jain monks don't eat underground vegetables also. Don't eat after sunset. And normal Jain people practice pure vegetarian diet throughout their life.

Omg 90% of the facts are completely wrong. Tibet is a high altitude place and hardly any vegetable are grown the except for white radish n wheat and few other. That’s y Tibetan are hugely dependent on animal product for survival. In Tibet people have tsampa for breakfast lunch n dinner. That’s the reason even though we are Buddhist we eat meat. But now in India you can find many Tibetan monk and people who are turning to vegetarian out of compassion for animal including me. Dalai Lama is always again animal cruelty but he consume eat for health reason.

There are many critical, opinionated, judgmental comments here. Everybody thinks their opinion and diet is the only way: all MEAT is wrong, GRAINS are wrong, YAK BUTTER TEA is gross (I've heard it's great), MEAT is not available in this region, VEGETABLES can't be grown in that region, the Dalai Lama is FAT (Huh?). Chill, folks. It just shows we live in a me, me, me culture and are quick to judge. Some humility, tolerance, and compassion is in order.

I eat vegetarian as I can but if I am a guest Im fine with accepting whatever is offered without complaint.
I will not scrutinize and ask what it is. Now if they invite me ahead of time and say, come friend I have made meat for you, I will kindly refuse but not denounce.

The Dalai Lama should release a cook book 😂 I bet it would be popular as it can offer well balanced diet with mainly vegitarian but also meat foods similar to his diet... Plus it would be very cultural so many people might try it just ti see.

causing animals unnecessary suffering is cruelty.
killing is no kindness. it's not food it's violence against the most innocent beings.
there are enough healthy plantbased foods to feed every human.
there's no excuse for animal abuse. none.

Wikipedia: Mares milk...drinking six ounces (190 ml) a day would be enough to give a lactose-intolerant person severe intestinal symptoms. (Colorado quickstep, we called it as a kid)

I read half his famed blook where he on the cover. This book was eventually stolen. I am Jewish y reside currently in the States. I want to say that my own life has been a multicultural walk. I've even been to the Buddhist temple. I've dated two buddists. I had a hospital employee from Nepal write my name on my hand not burned in a fire, the reason for my hospital stay. I've counseled buddists. I have learned some basic etiquette in both Tagalog, Hmong, y Laos. I am very greatful for my many experiences y have nothing but good to say about these tender, respectful, busy bees. Always a polite word from these beautiful Asian people. Salamat, or chow, y khob chai.

Wise man. He eats meat, butter and eggs. And he practices fasting.

Please find out BBC World Service TV interviews, Dalai Lama himself says he like eating veal (newly born calf meat) but through non-violence, ie stop feeding the calf so that it dies which is non-violence! He was very very fond of meat since his childhood, he said himself. Unfortunately, his own words are not propagated and false articles and videos are advertized everywhere.
