A study by the UK’s Newcastle University has reported that a gene called HLA-DRB1*04:01 gives protection against COVID-19.This gene is found 3 times more often in asymptomatic patients. It could explain why some people catch the virus but do not get sick. Asymptomatic subjects were compared to people from the same community who had developed COVID-19 and did not have any co-morbidity or underlying illness. The gene is directly related to latitude and longitude. More people from North and Western Europe are likely to have this gene. This means that people of European origin are more likely to be asymptomatic. But they can spread the disease to vulnerable populations. Genetic tests can be developed, which will help governments prioritize people for future vaccinations.
