NASA is taking a precautionary step in the direction of protecting earth from asteroids. The agency is expected to launch a spacecraft towards an asteroid the width of the tallest building on the planet, to find out how much force it would take to redirect a threat this large.

Imagine they hit the non-threatening asteroid. Changing its course having a chain effect that causes thousands of asteroids to actually be a threat.

There's gonna tell you it's a astroid protection measure but I'm gonna tell you other wise. We've known about this astroid for decades. We've planned to do this on 2022. It's November 2021. Lol. And it's also being conducted in California... Which is weird. It's weird. I like how they told us they renamed it. But they also rescheduled the appointment when it was scheduled for 2022. 🥵

NBC-Universal News:
Science and engineering story
1) tie it to major studio bad movie
2) crack a bad joke
3) spend about 15 seconds on the factual story
4) close it with clips of said movie

Wait for people to stream movie. $$$

I might be wrong, but unless the asteroid is merely floating, BARELY affected by any significant gravitational force... ramming it with a rocket won't do much, unless the goal is to obliterate it.

Otherwise, think of it like knocking a marble 'off course' in a basin or sink (as it rolls around)... it's STILL going to find the center of the drain.

I'm not certain everyone wi comprehend my metaphor, but believe me... it's about gravitational waves, not some 'linear path' (when it comes to what could endanger Earth).

If YOU have a better way to express it, please do so. 😊

AFAIC, this little mission is (mostly) a waste of billions of dollars for very little ROI.

Smells like a PR mission - get more funding for a Mars landing or something. Here's why: By roughly knowing the mass and motion dynamics of the asteroid, a simple computer model (that they should have anyway) would project the effects of a deliberate impact. No need to waste money by wrecking a rocket. The "impact" is going to be increased funding from the publicity.

Total b.s. Could they please attach a special Go Pro cam to that craft and live stream it leaving earth to about 30, 000 miles out ? ( not a measly 1, 000 ) I mean for 58 million dollars a day couldn'
t we get ONE good pic of the Earth that's not from the 1960's ?
