My CarMax experience was FANTASTIC!

My brother was able to get a much better offer for his Honda CRV trade in vs what the dealer and Carvana were willing to give him by selling to Carmax.

Dealer offer was $9,500
Carvana offered $11,500
Carmax offered $13,000!

Car max gave me 12k for my car then Vroom.com gave me 13.5k thank me later anyone looking to sell. You can also negotiate your offer with vroom by showing comps etc and they will listen. Carmax doesnt do that. My buddy just sold a Lexus Is vroom offerd 20k he spoke to aquisition team and was able to get them up to 21k by showing comps and validating that 21k was still good. They sealed the deal at 21k. Good luck

One thing to look out for: Lets say you want to buy a car for $20, 000 at a dealer and they give you $9500 trade value. You are then not going to pay sales tax on that money. The sales tax on your new car will only be based on $10, 500 difference. Now if you go to Carmax and they give you $13, 000, and then you take that and go to the other dealer to buy that car, your sales tax will be based on the full $20, 000 amount. So it will cost you quite a bit more in tax depending on your state.

Its good to get bunch of estimates..when I did mine a month ago carmax was 28k, so were some dealers and others like stub, vroom...i got 31k from a dealer....so just depends on timing, also I heard in last day or so used car prices have carmax was paying most for used vehicles....so get estimates from multiple places

I just sold my Ram truck to them a few days ago. Wanted to just get out of the big note. They gave me a fair price. More then most dealers would have on trade in. I actually made money. Yes, I could have sold it for more on the street but still owing a note on it, it would have been difficult to deal with selling to an individual. They made it fast and completely painless. Didn't even have to go turn my plate in, they did it for me. Id definitely go back to them in the future.

I have always found CARMAX high on new cars (like on e price pencil rather than 4-5) and cheap (low) on appraisals. Are either negotiatable. They told me one price for all. I bought a Prius at CARMAX. It was $28K, with $1.9K off. I found it later $4300 off MSRP after a few hours haggling. They also charge a "fee" to sell your a car, albeit not full DEALER fee.

So i can just bring my leased car with positive equity to this place and not need to worry about anything else...do i need to buy the car first bc a lease is really not ownership or can i just bring the lease as a lease? Oh wait think i get it so carmax buys it from the bank. Hmmm is that right?

Yeah they'll give you a fair trade, for YOUR car, knowing that the next person that buys it is paying probably more than market value for it... (which is what Carmax is known for).. They have to make the money either on the front end of the deal, or the back end lol.

Moral of the story, no one gets a free lunch. Someone, somewhere, is getting screwed, but that's the nature of the car business.
