The tiny radio call of the woman in Nebraska has so much potential lore behind it and I remember there being a throwaway line in the book about how the army was encountering militant survivor groups as they retook the continent.

That's how I always hoped TWD would end. Rick's group is getting more and more dwindled because of more and bigger herds of walkers and then the US Army kind of just shows up and you realize the increase in walker hordes is because they were being pushed back and contained. And then in the series finale the army finally gets to the east coast and find Rick's group after so many years of being on their own and thinking there was nothing left of the world and that everything was hopeless. Kind of like the final scene in Private Ryan when they're out of guys and ammo and right at the last minute the airplanes show up and bomb the tank.

That would have been a very poignant ending to that series. They fought for so long and lost so many people and in the end they're just kind of right back where they started.

Then again that would require decent writing which TWD was/is allergic to.

They use footage from the original ending they filmed in the montage. Originally the movie ends with him going to Russia and fighting there and they find out the cold slows down the zombies enough to give them a fighting chance.

I like to see a more intelligent version of the TV series The Living Dead. Theme should be outnumber humans have intelligence technology and organization to defeat the more numerous but simple minded zombie. A handful of horse riding hunters nearly killed all the Buffalo's on the American praries.
