I have 4 of them. If we are very lucky, the man will live long enough to complete all 6

It's weird to think about how the algorithms of our modern computer was derived solutions from a group of people arguing about who and how they will divide their inheritances. 😂

I read large part of it, and it is very difficult to read. It helps you understand how to write and optimize algorithms. The math is very difficult. We were a team of 6 helping each other through the book.

I recall finding an old book full of numerical methods- both giving approximations and computed tables for many, many functions.

I took a numerical methods class shortly after, and so I cited and used the book on many of my assignments (rather than just looking up that data online). My professor really appreciated it, said it reminded him of when he was a student.

I am currently taking a course on algorithms and Knuth has come up several times already

Robert Tarjan and Andrew Yao both read the first volume in full in 1970s. (Both are turing award winners).

I have 1, 2, 3 and 4A as well, but 1 and 3 are well worn, yes, not cover to cover (chapters 2 then 5/6) but certainly many parts reviewed thoroughly. Everyone hardcore at RPI in the 80s devoured and quoted Knuth.

what math do I require to learn to be ready for these books?

It's very nice, it's very awesome to own the first editions from around 1968-1973 as collectors but they are most definitely not very readable! 😂
I do not recommend these at all and if you want to study algorithms you can't go wrong with Cormen!
