I ride for enjoyment so I get not pushing as hard as I am able. Thanks for your insight! 🙂

I like to climb..I live in a valley surrounded by hills..so its good that I do..not great at climbing but I can do it just fine..and I to had to learn to just go at a speed and effort that I could maintain and be patient and accepting..blowing up on a climb is the worst!!

Basically he's talking about pacing and staying within yourself, and these are both best done using a power meter. If you train with it you'll know where your limits are and what you can comfortable sustain for a period of time. Also practice stomach breathing and balloon blowing therapy.

About 26 years ago we sat on a couch together in Michigan when John Tomac was racing. My son Ian was a little boy racing there and you gave him advice. Now he is a pro class 24 hour MTB specialist and known as Big Dirty Mullins.
My how time flies.

I agree, getting into a climbing rhythm is key

Glute activation will make you a better climber, time trialist and sprinter. That's basically why Sagan is good at everything. Efficient muscle activation is the hardest to achieve, but the most rewarding!

Bobke provides a lot more detail, but I found a mantra for my own riding, especially climbing: Ride within yourself. I'm 66, have had a (very minor) stroke, have osteoarthritis in right shoulder and left ankle, but last July, as part of the Wisconsin AIDS Ride, I rode the full route on the 100-mile day. "Riding within myself" on that day meant spending more than 13 hours to cover the 100 miles.

Interesting advice. When most would probably talk about watts, watts per weight, gearing, climbing wheels, etc...Bobke tells it like it is. Thank you for realistic advice we can use.

'if you are breathing so hard you can't hear anything....' LMAO. classic.

Looks like a nice Eames leg splint in the background there. Pretty cool.

Thanks for sharing Bobke, you've been there and done it enough to really know, i live in Florida so I can only dream of climbing. You have all my respect.

It relaxes me to think about climbing as putting money (elevation) into the bank. I'm just adding to the downhill fun I'll get on the other side.
Another smaller tip, useful mainly when trying to keep up in a race or group ride, is not to collapse and stop pedaling when you reach the top. Accelerate over the top, get moving on the downhill, and only then ease up on the pedals, coast, and have a drink or snack. Of course it helps to know where the top IS.

I ride my ride. I climb my climb. My rhythm. Ride to the level of your smile.

Good advice. I flap my elbows like a chicken when I climb. It looks kinda weird but helps me get into a rhythm. Anyhoo. You have a good sense of humor and radiate high vibrational energy. Subbed!!

to be a good climber you must have a good attitude. I've talked myself out of many climbs. Embrace the pain!

Great one Bob! So nice we have 28's now - helps keep the cadence up which helps me maintain pace - not grinding.
