Thank you but, how about keeping it real for the average guy who does not have $15, 000 in microphones?

I watched all three videos and I think there is some good information in there to get you started.  The idea is to discover and experiment.  The goal is to capture the magic when it happens.  You never know when or what that will be.  Hopefully the "Record" button is on.

There is no way that somebody with killer mic collection, needs a workshop like this. You should really show us how to do more with less not less with more. And by the way... he's playing DW, where is that midrange punch???

"Most people think it's a big complicated set up of microphones to record a drum set, but I'm gonna show you some tricks to make a simple drum mic set up." Then he sets up 4 overheads, close mics on every drum, a friggin bass drum tunnel, and 3 room mics!? What a nifty shortcut! SMH

What else would you expect from a Guitar Center "workshop"?
And yeah, all those artists he named would never have live drums like this in their music.
I also don't think the "bass tunnel" was long enough. I never use less than 6 bass drum shells for my tracks. You can totally tell the difference.

I wonder, what's your opinion on mic'ing toms and floortoms from the bottom with large (titanium) diagraphm condenser mics pointing at the center of resonant head (so basically similar approach as mic'ing kick drum) ?

thats what you sound like with a german accent with a southern american dialect... lol

When he said that the overheads should be high enough so that the drummer doesn't "destroy one, " is he referring to sound pressure blowing the capsule or the drummer actually hitting one?

I would assume the latter, but I'm just making sure that I'm not hurting my midrange condenser mics if I continually place them lower than this guy suggests when I'm recording.

I still like the way John Bonham was captured. One overhead one mic in front of the kit. Jazz drummers like young Buddy Rich, Joe Morello, Max Roach, etc. same way with minimal. Try it if you like to experiment. The mics are nothing but electronic ears, as long as your drums are tuned right, place an overhead and one in front of you. Try different distance and compare.
