In the movie The Flight of the Phoenix, based on James McCabe’s novel of the same name, a supersonic jet runs out of fuel over the Mediterranean Sea. The only way to save the passengers is to bail out before their ultra-expensive plane crashes into the sea. As they jump out of the doomed aircraft, they see a luxurious yacht carrying their rich financier friend heading in their direction. He offers them passage to safety on his boat— at no cost to them— if they will only delay jumping until he can pick them up. Seeing no other choice, they reluctantly accept his offer and wait for him to rescue them. After a suspenseful rescue scene, where the rich man struggles to tow his friends back to safety, he finds that he has run out of fuel as well too. However, his life is saved when a passing bridge comes within his reach just at that crucial moment. With their rich friend’s help, all six passengers make it safely back home in time for Christmas— without spending a penny on gasoline or food during their long and perilous journey.

How did using a bridge solve this problem? Since there was not enough fuel left in their plane, these people needed help getting back home. A bridge would have been a perfect solution since it could transport people without any additional supplies needed. The rich man would have gladly paid for this service since it would have saved him from losing his entire fortune and possibly his life as well. Unfortunately, though, nobody could imagine this concept at the time so there was no way for him to carry out his good deed without running afoul of law enforcement officials first. In fact, he could have spent several years in jail for illegally transporting people across state lines without first obtaining all necessary permits and licenses required by law!

Besides directly solving a problem with any number of people who could have benefited from such intervention at that time, a bridge could also indirectly solve problems such as these by opening up new areas of travel and commerce for others who had previously been unable to access them due to lack of transportation or funds required to make such trips happen. For example, transporting people across state lines had once been done by train— but trains ran only within certain designated areas at any given time. With this concept now allowing people anywhere in the country access to private jets that could bring them instantly wherever they wanted to go, this one act opened up entire new areas of commerce and growth for many years afterward. Had anyone else tried what this man did— with all six passengers dying while waiting on an illegal crossing — authorities would undoubtedly have stepped in sooner or later and arrested everyone involved! But because this one man knew how to find a solution that worked — even when nobody else had thought of doing so — things like The Flight of the Phoenix were able promote growth across several different fields instead!
