Dorothy Dandridge Facts. Dorothy Dandridge (1922-1965) was the first African American woman to receive an Academy Award nomination for best actress for her performance in the 1954 film Carmen Jones.

Dandridge performed as a vocalist in venues such as the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater. During her early career, she performed as a part of The Wonder Children, later The Dandridge Sisters, and appeared in a succession of films, usually in uncredited roles.

Her career suffered a lot due to the racism of the era..Did her husband ever financially help her out with their child...I never knew she was bipolar. Many say Marilyn Monroe was too they were good friends. Dorothy is seen in pictures attending her funeral service..Very few Celebrities were allowed to attend..Her Ex husband made sure of that..Only true friends..now a days there is so much medication for that..who knows what was available back then. Was she buried in the clothes she died in..The clean and Prep the body before burial. Her letter written before she passed away was very specific..
