I have lettuce sprouting in a makeshift cold frame of straw bales and cinder blocks. 4 degrees F overnight but 26 in the cold frame. Can't wait to see what happens. First time I'm trying it out.

So glad you got a greenhouse! So cool! We are growing carrots and lettuce from ones bought at the store. We put them in our southwest facing window and they are growing! Amazing!

Let me add one: Claytonia (Miner's Lettuce). It's very delicate of leaf and flavor, and thrives in cold weather! We absolutely love it.

A big bonus you forgot to mention is that there's a whole lot less pests at this time of year.

My dad forced bulbs in the winter. He watered them with snow. They could take the amount of water they needed and the snow insulated them, so that the water they took did not freeze.

This was a great episode! I had been thinking about trying to grow things over winter in my window, but a cold frame sounds like a great idea!

Happy holidays!!! I ordered so many seeds from you and I'm so satisfied. I look forward to my winter garden which I've already sowed seeds, many of which I bought from your shop.

This is great! I just checked my salad greens under the grow light and my spinach went straight to seed as soon as it sprouted! This is super helpful thank you! It's crazy to think this time last year it was 75 degrees and this year we are lucky to get above freezing for a couple hours. I'm hoping to get my greenhouse done soon.

My new greenhouse was just built and everyone wants to know what I’m growing. 😂 First I have to get the kinks out - stake it down, landscape stones around the edges, weed fabric and gravel for floor, then move all the shelves/supplies inside and set up a thermometer inside. Glad I’m taking time to get these done before sacrificing seeds.

With the exception of Florida, and southern California, I think we are all experiencing a severe winter this year. My garden was thriving until yesterday. Now it is taking a beating. I lost a lot that is outside the protection of greenhouse plastic, lettuce and endive for sure. It will be Monday, or Tuesday before I dare remove the plastic covering my raised beds to fully assess the damage. From what I can see, there is some loss, but also a lot that is hanging on. In a few weeks, I'll be adding a small greenhouse to my garden, 10x12x7, and making three 2ft x 8ft x 8 inch raised beds to go inside it. I'll be able to add bio mass or supplemental heat if needed, and bring a few containers inside next year to get my garden through the coldest days of winter. I'll be better prepared the next time an artic blast comes south to Alabama.

Hi Luke, so glad you are enjoying your greenhouse. I was wondering about the other land you bought for greenhouses and farmers market? You have not mentioned it for a while. I know you were waiting on permits the last time I heard you mention it, just wondering how that is going?

I have read kind of the opposite about growing in the ground vs in containers. The containers can freeze solid a lot more easily than the ground due to having smaller thermal mass. I am winter growing in my first year with a smaller greenhouse in z6 MO. I have some stuff in ground and some in containers, so far they have been similar.

I started some in October and they grew super well and I already harvested my radishes and spinach already. My turnips are still going but close to maturity. Stuff I started in November have been super slow. So far I havent seen rot or dampening off but my greenhouse is on a slope so it has the effect of being a raised bed without being a very high one ...

Great supporting info Luke. I would have to agree. We are in our 3rd day below 15 degrees and my Kale, cabbage, radish and spinach which are all uncovered and looks unbothered. Surprisingly, my Yarrow is still looking good. The swiss chard not as good and I did cover them. Collards are frozen but I believe they will survive. While I am not a fan of this cold weather it's refreshing to know that planning for these days by planting accordingly is paying off so far. Best growing to all and Happy Holidays.
