Will The World Give Up European Cars For Made-In-China Electric Vehicles?

China emerged as one of the world’s top car exporters in 2023, powered by its massive push for electric vehicles. Buoyed by years of heavy government investments, subsidies, and manufacturing rebates, Chinese automakers have flooded overseas markets as global EV demand continues to rise. In Q4 2023, China’s BYD even outsold Tesla in sales volume for the first time.

Amid the advent of Chinese brands like NIO and Xpeng, the European Union launched an anti-subsidy investigation into China’s EV trade practices in late 2023. The move prompted swift retaliation from China, sparking concerns about a trade war.

when EU cars dominated in China's markets, China didn't do any sanctions or says, instead they worked harder to be #1 today; when China starts dominating EU, EU just sanction instead of working hard

As a customer I don't care which country makes the product as long as I get value for money, if that means a Chinese made car over a European car then so be it. The EU gives out grants to companies which essentially is a subsidy, I don't see an issue for China giving companies subsidies. At the end of the day if the product is good, reasonably priced and efficient I don't care where it's made.

Sun Tze: "Fight where the enemy are not."
China cannot compete in the ICE market; and since EV is still new, competing there makes more sense.

What a cheap shot from EU and US. What us fair trade ? A fair trade should be free with no restriction. For us as a consumer, competitive price and free market is valued to us as we can get cheaper products for daily use. Who care which country will a car come from as long as it fit our needs ...

These cars from China are pretty amazing. Got a chance to see them up close and was pretty amazed by the quality, looks and functionality. Absolutely blown away when I check and see how affordable they are online. Can't wait to get them here in North America. I can buy them outright instead of having $800-1200 in monthly forever payments.

As someone who drives a BYD, I can say I am definitely happy to be a part of this.

If it wasn't about China, would it matter?

I am Chinese, ordinary people, I have finance pressure from House, car, family… I don’t care about politics, I don’t care which country the brand products belong to, I just care about the price affordable for me and quality, so that finally I selected BYD last year, actually I like Tesla too, however my pocket is a little bit empty. if your country product is good and affordable, China market will not give up your product, no matter which country your brand belongs to : )

I didn't become financially independent until I was in my late 40's, and I'm still in my 40's. In addition to having purchased my second home and earning money on a monthly basis through passive income, I've also achieved three out of five goals. I just hope this inspires someone to realize that it doesn't matter if you don't have any of these things yet, you can start today no matter your age. Change your future by investing! I made a rather big decision by investing in the financial market.

Americans and Europeans heavily subsidied its industry like aircraft manfacturing, carmakers, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture sectors.

Let me tell you an interesting experience. I run a car repair shop in Italy. One of my customers is a 2022 new car DACIA. This is a French car brand established in Romania. Using the car inspection computer, I can log in to the model from ten years ago (explaining this) French car companies use hardware and software from ten years ago to produce 2022 cars

Why does China can make cars so cheaply with better quality? It is not about government’s subsidies. China has cheaper labor, cheaper energy, cheaper materials, cheaper supply chains and hardest workers and engineers. How can Western countries beat it?

When Europe couldn't beat new energy vehicles, it started to engage in protectionism. However, they don't treat Tesla cars this way. Of course, the same goes for the United States. When it cannot compete, it closes itself off.

If China can make a reliable, good safety handling and after sales service it is not impossible, I remember in the 8s people mock Japanese cars as soft and unreliable

Chinese E-vehicle subsidy can be claimed by any car manufacturers located in China, regardless its being Chinese or foreign brand as long as they are e-vehicles.

60 to 100 billion dollars on EV segment. And here in America we must have waited that much in handouts, wars and bailouts!

I think it's unfair to judge a product solely based on where it is made. What really matters is the quality of the product and the customer service it provides. Some people tend to overlook the fact that Nio produces excellent cars and has a superior infrastructure when compared to that of Tesla. However, because it originates from China, it is often looked down upon. I believe this kind of bias is unnecessary and we should focus on the actual product instead.

Over 18 months ago, Jaguar Land Rover were already circulating internal memos about the onslaught of Chinese cars coming to Europe. They had plenty of time to react and it seems too late.
