Synopsis

This video demonstrates the effectiveness of using light artillery to defend narrow passes, like bridge defense. You have to spread out your artillery pieces to get the maximum arc of fire.

In order for this to work, you need to employ the most effective defensive unit that you have. In my case, the hoplite was the best defensive unit. The Parthians don't have the best infantry, and they were no match for Roman infantry. Never the less, the artillery gave me better odds of success. The infantry could be used to hold the bridge, and this would create a bottleneck on the bridge for my enemies. The density of targets on the bridge give me a better hit probability. Each scorpion bolt could go threw a few people, it could easily penetrate 2 to 3 people with their shields.

In this scenario, I am defending two bridges, so I had to spread my forces out. In this scenario, the enemy broke threw on both sides, but I defeated them on one side. Then, I moved my forces from that side to the side where the main breakthru was at. Scorpions being light artillery could be moved, but if I had other types of heavy artillery I could not. I moved my artillery from one point to another, and positioned them to hold back the enemy. At the same time, my hoplites were used to hold the enemy. The artillery managed to halt the enemy advance. Then, I moved the scorpions to the enemy's rear while they were busy fighting my hoplites. The fire from rear tipped the balance of the battle to my favor.

The point is to demonstrate the effectiveness of life artillery when holding narrow passes. It could be used in a modern context as well. When artillery is concentrated on a single point where enemy concentrations are dense, it could cause the most casualties.
