The Censored Candles of the Aromages

In the artwork for a lot of the Aromage monsters, there are various candles that can be seen in the background of most of them. Or in the case of Aromage Jasmine and Aromage Rosemary front and center. And you’d be surprised to learn that these candles are all changed from their OCG counterparts.

Konami didn’t want to nurture any pyromaniacs through aromatherapy waifu’s

considering we’re only just now getting new pyro support, it’s no surprise that konami hates fire

Now i know while their 'aroma' mages. I always wondered why since i didn't know they were candles

TCG saw waifus without body bits to cover and said "Fire is too hot on this girl"

Oh wow, Aromages are my favourite archetype but I wasn't aware of this at all! Tbh not even knowing why they're censored makes it even more annoying, but at least it's not overly intrusive compared to a lot of other cases lol

I got two guesses. Either they didnt want kids seeing the candles, for fear of them getting a bunch and causing a fire trying to mimic the characters, or because the use of candles in association to magic was deemed to occult for a game kids would be playing

I just want more Aromage support. Loved using this deck

We have an Impcantation Candoll I'm way more suspicious about than scented candles for aromatherapy.

I have a guess, it's probably because they can't depict characters being "reckless" around items that kids could have access to irl. Kinda like they probably wouldn't want to have a character running with scissors or similar.

they pretty much censored anything that could be tied to demonic or occult imagery, candles fall into occult though no one would actually make the connection and just think pretty artwork.

Of course they got rid of the flames, you wouldn't want the cards to catch fire all of a sudden

I don’t understand censorship most of the time, it just tends to be stuff like “We took away the quarter-inch of exposed thigh on this card because kids could beat off to it”

Konami probably thought kids would imitate playing with candles and end up hurting themselves

Never knew my favorite archtype was censored in such a bizarre way.

I cant find the source for it but, it was said somewhere it was to try and prevent kids form immitating use of aromatherapy oils and candles because plant oils can cause toxic fumes if mixed or not handled properly, as well as the obvious use of flames

They probably thought the candles would be impressionable on kids. Same reason people use to censor matches in cartoons. They didn't want kids to be encouraged by matches. Especially because kids started a lot of fires back then.

The censorship of yugioh cards is downright insulting. They think they’re protecting innocence when they’re just being paternalistic to adults!

with other 10, 000 cards in game, sometimes you cast logic to the wind

I don't know how relevent the kid demographic for YGO even is today but at that point couldn't we just ditch the censoring for good ? I still can't believe we're in an era with 4kids style censorship on a card game that's overwhelmingly played by 20 to 30 year old dudes
