Cloud is just a broken man on FF7 and Advent Children. You can see how he's a happy dude in Crisis Core, and then after what happened, being mako infused for 4 years, poisonong him afterwards, making his head just a complete mess and watching his friend die in front of him. He ends up being empty inside, uninterested by everything, being an asshole to everyone, having headaches and visions because of sequels of mako poisoning, and his emotions only come out when Sephiroth appears, like triggering some sort of PTSD. Poor Cloud is just an empty shell looking for some purpose, and that's why he mimics Zack, his only good memory.

This is something many people don't get about Cloud. I've seen multiple times people saying square changed his personality after the original FF7, but Cloud was not himself during FF7 story, thats why he's so broken in Advent children, he still don't know who he is, and is holding on to his past mistakes, the cloud from Nibelheim is the one Tifa wants him to comeback to.

It's crazy when you think about how they wanted each other's roles. Zack was in SOLDIER but wanted to be a hero, Cloud became a hero but wanted to be in SOLDIER.

this is what makes cloud's character development so awesome. cloud isn't just copying zack, but obviously i won't say more to ruin it for those who only played the remake. i will say, who better to copy than zack? after playing crisis core, zack ended up taking cloud's spot of being my favorite final fantasy protag. ended up putting poor vivi in 3rd haha.
