Advanced Squad Leader Tutorial #10 - Rout Principles
0:00 - Intro
1:34 - Routing in a Nutshell
2:32 - Does the unit have to rout?
5:32 - Do they surrender instead?
7:27 - Where does the unit rout?
10:09 - Can the unit be interdicted?
12:44 - May the unit continue to rout?
14:14 - German rout examples
28:18 - Russian rout examples
38:39 - Do I roll low?/supporter roll call

In the 10th Boot Camp I show you the four important points of routing and go through some examples using German and Russian units.

The goal of ASL Boot Camp is to present rule and tactical discussions for new and veteran players. New Boot Camp Exercises posted ... well, when I make them (hint: there's no schedule!). Also, if I screw up a rules interpretation (we all do) in any of my videos, PLEASE post in the comments so we can correct it!!!

Can't thank you enough for your series of videos on ASL! I just finished up watching all of the (currently existing) tutorials in your ASL Boot Camp Series and can't wait for future additions! Between your Boot Camp and the VASL 101/201 series of videos, you have significantly raised my level of understanding and enjoyment of this magnificent obsession we call ASL! Became a supporter and hope to keep you in pizza for as many years as you keep cranking out this great content! Thanks again!

Great video! I believe that the squad in the first example can rout to both woods hexes, because the Russian squad in N9 is not KEU at the start of the phase. Of course the German squad must then bounce once adjacent. Cheers

Good video. I wasn't grasping the difference between broken units and NEUs as they relate to routing. Now I think I got it.

Great video Neil! I played squad leader back in the early 80s and have recently gotten back into the hobby. Your videos are a great source for me plus your teaching technique is simple to understand. Question on the unit in M8. I believe this unit has to route to either M9 or N8 as the Russian in N9 is not in LOS. From there they would bounce. Correct me if I am wrong. Please keep up the good work and roll low.

In the example the first unit can and actually must go N8 or M9 as the soviet unit in that direction is not KEU.

And I'm back... Got a lot to work on routing. Got a few squads to rout coming up in my PBeM game!

So Neal. In the second example using bypass movement, couldn’t he head to the woods at 10 o’clock by using the lower vertex of the K hex? Because he starts by heading in a south westerly direction and then swings around the other vertex to a north westerly direction .

Neal, approx 10:12, the graphic for “NO”… : Question - Shouldn’t the text read “If, as Interdictor, has any Positive Fire Modifier Apply” instead of Negative?

33:08 When Unit 4 moves to I8(34:50) you say that L9 is now KEU. Does J8 hex hill stops LOS between I8-L9?

Question for German squad three's route - since distance to a KEU is assessed at path selection, wouldn't F5 be an illegal target for declaration on the onset? The destination of F5 will reduce squad three's distance to the broken KEU in hex I7.

Could squad 1 route one hex to the south and then bounce to the adjacent German squad? The broken squad does not have los to the Russian squad in n9 at the start of the route so he would route away from the keu in los first.

@Can it be interdicted - You should be using the term Positive modifiers apply not Negative. - Your voice over speaks the truth the Point bulletin is incorrect
@16:58 the squad A in M8 can route to M9 and discovering the Russian squad could then continue on to L9 and then further if it chose to.
Squad 3 must route to J1as going the way you chose is having him end up closer to the guy on the hill. As a J1 is only 4 mp away
Routing unit in S6 must surrender if NQ is NOT in effect

How can Ger Squad #4 move from E5 to D5 ? I thought he wouldn't be allowed to move closer to the KEU in E7 ?
