BuzzFeed Is Stuck In the Past

It's been a while since I've really heard anybody talk about BuzzFeed. They used to be one of the most relevant media companies - even if they were usually the butt of the joke. Now it feels like other companies have stepped in and taken over, but BuzzFeed has decided to stay the course and change absolutely nothing about their business model. Especially the quizzes.

Just went on the buzzfeed website, found a quiz titled “I’ll slurp my jeans up through a straw, if I can’t guess your age based on the garden you build”
Buzzfeed what the fuck? Are you ok?

when buzzfeed steals tumblr posts to embed in their listicles, the original poster can edit their post and the edited version will be embedded in its place. the obvious result is, when you find out buzzfeed steals your post, you can wreck their whole article with "BUZZFEED PAY ME ROYALTIES" repeated over and over again. its a tradition over there.

When I learned BuzzFeed did journalism and news I actually laughed a little bit I imagined headlines like "OMG we just pulled out of Afghanistan and its just SO random!"

you know what, in a weird way i like that buzzfeed hasn’t changed, it’s like a sort of time capsule where i can go onto their website and take a dumb quiz and pretend it’s 2014 and i don’t have adult problems

also their trivia quizzes are easy as hell so it makes me feel smart

"You're ten years off!" You look fantastic for a 45-year-old man, Scott.

“Why I left buzzfeed” is the only thing I know from buzzfeed now

Buzzfeed is like that one aunt that shows up at every family gathering even though none knows who invited them to sell you into their essential oil MLM

There was more than one occasion where college professors would show us Buzzfeed videos in class and all I could think was “I took out student loans for this?”

I made a Disney themed buzzfeed quiz back in 2014, I still get emails every so often whenever it hits the trending page 😂

i think it’s interesting that buzzfeed hasn’t tried to expand. they’ve stayed on their website and youtube. I’m surprised they haven’t tried to utilize tiktok or twitter

Since I was 28 in 2008 you can imagine how much I destroyed that quiz.

There are quizzes other than BuzzFeed? My whole life has been a lie

As a person who’s on the cusp of Millennial/Gen Z who grew up on buzzfeed quizzes: looking back on it I feel like buzzfeed is just the introduction to the internet. I could still see 12 year olds doing those random quizzes about school subjects lol. Also anyone remember quizilla???

I always say that the only good contet BuzzFeed made is their Unsolved series (both True Crime & Supernatural). But now Ryan & Shane went to do their own thing so that means even less people will be watching it

Fun story! At the start of the pandemic last year, my friends and I had a bunch of Skype calls together where we would often play shitty BuzzFeed quizzes.

One day, one of my friends and I decided to make one of our own parody quiz. So I made an account, and suggested an idea: "Create your dream bagel, and we'll find your SpongeBob soulmate." We thought it was hilarious. I came up with a series of bagel-construction-related questions, and all the results were overtly sexual descriptions of SpongeBob characters (ie, the wonderful things Squidward could do with his nose) accompanied by photos of completely random stock photo models.

The next day, I decide to check in on it, and I notice a bunch of activity... Tons of comments... Plus a notification from BuzzFeed saying that I... I was featured on the front page?

Yes, that's right ladies and gentleman. It was on the front page. You had to scroll for a bit, but it was there. And BuzzFeed approved it. Sure, it was heavily edited, but it was still basically the same idea.

Why, BuzzFeed? Why?

(Feel free to look it up btw, lol)

But without Buzzfeed who's gonna tell me which quote from The Office is my personal mantra??

Neat! An ex girlfriend of mine from college used to write for buzzfeed! At the time I would literally sit with her while I drank whiskey in copious amounts and and help her write articles. I won't mention her name, but know that some buzzfeed articles are partially written by some 21 year old college girl's drunk boyfriend at 4AM. :) Which kind of explains a whole lot about how bad (I mean AWESOME!!!!) some of their material is. So if you see something like "17 exotic places that your cat NEEDS to see during their 9 lives!!!" it was most likely actually largely written by the credited author's drunken boyfriend in the middle of the night. Dang....I had so much fun making up the dumbest stuff for those. and literally none of her articles ever got turned down. I wish I could post her name and take credit for some of it, but she was a nice gal, so I'll leave her out of it hahahaha.

BuzzFeed is a classic example of how when you mistreat your employees severely, sometimes there are consequences. All their talent has left for better things, and I'm glad.
