How to Place an NPA on a Live Person

Nasal Pharyngeal Airways (NPA) are a great way of keeping the airways open in casualties who are not conscious. When they wake up, the casualty's first move is usually to remove the NPA.

This is ok, because now that the casualty is awake, they can then protect their own airway and no longer have a need for the NPA.

Is it ok if I fold my NPA? My IFAK is too small to keep it in its original form.

I'm a washed up fighter, which means my nose is mainly for decoration purposes, as it tends to happen for most of us boxers. If I get to use one of these, it'll probably be on the gym trying to help out one of my unconscious buddies. Are there any indication or rather contraindications for using this on messed up noses?

Oof, I couldn’t help but shed a manly sympathy tear of my own for him. 😬 (I’ve had sinus issues including triple surgery so I can sympathize with the tubes and cameras being stuck up the nose and probed around. Not a fan.)

Isn't an NPA also indicated for someone who is conscious with obstructions in their mouth, someone who is unable to swallow or cough, etc?

Do you recommend this for any trauma that involves unconsciousness? Are we to assume that when unconscious, any victim will have trouble breathing?
