Pink Dragons: The Forgotten Dragon Type

This week we are taking a look at a monster some might consider a meme. The pink dragon is certainly real though, and it has been in at least one official D&D product! These draconic jokesters are one of my favorite obscure D&D monsters, and I am so happy to be bringing them from AD&D to 5E Dungeons and Dragons!

I like the idea that the scroll, even if read, makes no sense as a joke without the proper context of the events thousands of years ago. So the players read, “The long wind bellows through the canyon of the mountainfolk, ” and don’t realize until they deliver it to the dragon, who bursts out laughing, that it’s an ancient elven joke about farting Dwarves.

I love the idea that, since Metallic and Chromatic dragons are instinctively against each other, the Pink Dragons initiate prank wars against Copper Dragons, or have joke competitions between each other. While all other dragons of their kinds go for each other’s throats, they instead go for each other’s wits. Sure, Pink Dragons are not evil, but the Chromatic-Metallic rivalry continues. I like to think that some even overcome their base instinct and become witty comedian couples.

It would be even more hillarious, to find this creature in a dark room not knowing what a pink dragon is, because you can't see colours in the dark.
So they would see this dragon creature and it would wake up, only to tell some jokes and when they light a torch to see it's bright pink to everyone's confusion.

My immediate reaction to hearing about Good Impression is that they start the move with "Stop me if you've heard this one before..."

I can see Pink Dragons actually hoarding not only jokes, but comedians. Maybe not even 'hoard' but just sometimes show up to hang out and have a good old fashioned back and forth of material.

One of the reasons why I love the pink dragon is that even though its a joke monster it doesn't double down on the joke aspect
Its like watching a serious movie that has a brief light-hearted moment before getting back to seriousness
Imagine a Pink dragon kidnapping people with the promise that if one day they tell a good joke that the dragon didn't know about, they are free

The party quests to an ancient destroyed city with an undead infestation. After days of fighting and searching they find an ancient scroll in a forgotten language. The wizard curses himself, having chosen to learn them the normal way, as he believed it was both lazy and a waste of power to cast comprehend language. The journey back to the grand wizard is long and arduous, taking weeks. Upon receiving the scroll the wizard opens it with a flourish, reads it, and bursts into laughter. Her elvish form begins to expand, before turning into the form of a great dragon the color of cherry blossoms. The wizard stammers "what does it say?"

She replies simply "you wouldn't understand." Before mumbling between chuckles "the dog opens its eyes. How could I have forgotten?"

The endless possibilities of putting a grey jester with the pink dragon are so much fun. The party's could run into a dragon whose goal is to make a grey jester laugh.

In my home brew Japanese fantasy setting, i have a Bloom Dragon that's also supposed to be pink in color. Maybe I take some of the characteristics from this. Thanks!

I like the idea that the pink dragon has come up with a really good but highly specific standup routine. so they’re sending the party on a quest just so they’ll understand all of the jokes when they get back

Does the pink dragon count as chromatic? Because if so it can be used as a replacement head for one of Tiamat’s 5 heads… do with that information what you want

The pink dragon sounds like it would fit just fine in the feywild, alongside the Faerie dragon and other mischievous fay creatures.

Man... In my campaign there's an ancient copper dragon who posed as Acererak, built a parody of the Tomb of Horrors where the traps are funny instead of deadly, and founded a secret society of bards just to watch adventurers struggle and get frustrated with the tomb like a TV show. How I wish I made Kristen The Buffoon a pink dragon instead... Maybe I could give her a pink dragon friend tho... 👀

Hmm, perhaps there can be a lore reason why this one is different. Like a mischief or trickster fey stole some Dragon eggs by replacing them with the eggs of another creature, and raised the dragons and they ended up becoming Pink Dragons due to Feywild weirdness and become the Fey's emissaries/vassals.

The Dragon sends you on an epic journey to retrieve a Bag of Holding that contains endless treasure, when the party finally find the bag it's a Bag of Devouring, discussed as a Bag of Holding. The dragon will either laugh hysterically or be very disappointed depending on how many party members are left when they return with the bag

Idea for a plotline involving a pink dragon:
- The party is in a tavern or other meeting place, asking for a lead on an artifact or something that can defeat the BBEG.
- A polymorphed pink dragon approaches them.
- The dragon promises to tell them where to find the artifact, but they must first recover a small, 20-sided gemstone from a distant dungeon.
- The directions to the dungeon have the party running around in circles for an hour, turns out it was actually just outside the town they were in but on the other side of the town from the gate they left.
- The dungeon turns out to be Ruinsmith's "Most Annoying Dungeon Ever".
- The gemstone is one of the D20s from the table where the skeletons are playing a TTRPG where only the GM rolls dice.
- When the party returns, either covered in dirt (from digging out of the entrance after passing backwards through the wall of force), genderbent (from rolling 20 on another D20 at the table) or covered in scorch marks (from escaping the Nine Hells), the dragon is still in the tavern but is no longer polymorphed and takes up half the space inside the tavern. Everyone in the tavern laughs at the party as they enter the door.
- Turns out the dragon told everyone about the huge prank they pulled on you while you were away.
- They can honor their promise or not, it's up to you. I feel it would be better if the dragon did honor their promise since that fits more with their whole good-natured comedy thing, but you could make them particularly nasty and not uphold the promise.

It’s Mitzune! It’s a pink monster that blows soapy bubbles that make your character slip around, and it uses it to slide around very quickly itself. It can also do a beam attack of soapy water.

I love the idea of a character that is a pink dragon but forgot that they were a pink dragon while they were polymorphed. And the only remnant of them being one is occasionally puking out bubbles.

I can see infinite potential for the interactions of Pink Dragons and Grey Jesters. Like, would they hate each other? be friendly peers?
Do the players get roped into being the judges for a comedy competition and have to fight the losing participant to the death?
So many straight AND silly possibilities.
