Death Star Construction Timelapse - Score Breakdown/Tutorial

In this video I break down the original score I composed for the "Death Star Construction Timelapse" video. I go not only into the composition and orchestration process (it needed to sound like Star Wars music!), but I also show which virtual instrument libraries I used and share some helpful virtual orchestration tips.

I used the following virtual instrument libraries:

Berlin Brass (Orchestral Tools)
Berlin Woodwinds (Orchestral Tools)
Berlin Woodwinds Expansion B - Soloists (Orchestral Tools)
Berlin Strings (Orchestral Tools)
Berlin Percussion (Orchestral Tools)
Metropolis Ark 1 (Orchestral Tools)
Metropolis Ark 2 (Orchestral Tools)
Soaring Strings (Musical Sampling)
Adventure Strings (Musical Sampling)
CinePerc Core (CineSamples)
Skaila Kanga - Harp Redux (Spitfire Audio)
(a couple misc perc FX from various libraries)

Having listened to and loved John Williams all my life (35yrs), I recognized his signature cues and instrumentation that you replicated and incorporated outstandingly well. This has to be one of the closest representations of Williams' work derived from the scores he composed for Star Wars. Regardless of what many may think about the sequel trilogy, one thing we can most definitely appreciate is that John Williams was still around to create new music for us to all enjoy! Anyways, I give you MAD props on fashioning an original piece that certainly captures the spirit and sound of The Empire from Star Wars! Kudos!

From 2:00 to 4:00, I actually like hearing the score and seeing the software display even more than seeing the death star timelapse! The line moving across the screen and so much color coded info and the progress of the time counters is a treat for the eyes. Everything I have ever liked about star wars scores in 120 seconds! And this video is like the magician showing us all his tricks! awesome :)

This is just absolutely beautiful. Very little music has been able to get stuck in my head for more than two weeks.

This came up in YT suggestions this morning, and I'm glad it did - really interesting walkthrough, seeing how you arrange the parts across different articulations and libraries, and how the arrangement works over time. Really great piece of work - totally convincing to me, fits right in the style of John Williams. Thanks for sharing, and being big enough to show us the odd rough bits here and there - I think it's really important for people to see that even great pieces of work like this have some rough edges here and there, and that they don't detract from the fantastic end result.

When you don't listen to this when watching the Death Star time lapse video, it sounds like a combination of Star Wars and Harry Potter. And wouldn't you know it, John Williams did both those movies :). Your music is fantastic and it's amazing how much you managed to create the Star Wars like sound. Well done.

from 3:15 to 3:32, you may have exceeded any Star Wars soundtrack. Even right after hearing the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack, this thing gave me chills! Amazing!
