How To Mix A Song From Scratch - The Static Mix - RecordingRevolution.com

Part 1 of 6 - How do you take the raw tracks you've recorded for your song and turn them into a powerful and punchy mix with clarity and depth?

That's what I'm about to show you as today I'm starting a brand new mini series on how to mix your song from the ground up.

Mixing is the step where you begin taking things like EQ, compression, reverb, and delay to start sculpting your song even more and presenting it in the best light possible.

But instead of randomly grabbing plugins and turning virtual knobs, only hoping to get a good mix, I want to show you a step by step plan to enhance your recordings.

And it all begins with the most important step - the static mix!

A nice trick I learned at recording school was that once you finish mixing, play the mix back at very low volume and if you can still hear all your tracks/ instruments, then you already have a good mix.

Graham: I’ve been a home-recording enthusiast for the last 14 years, reading absolutely everything I could find on the topic to get better with my mixes. And this video was the first time I ever heard ANYBODY mention the static mix. That in itself is pretty surprising (unless it’s just so common no one ever thinks to mention it). What was even more surprising, though, was the difference this approach has made in my own mixes. I’ve done some recording work for friends’ albums, but most of the time I’m recording/mixing myself. And, like many (I’m guessing), I tend to mix as I go. But thanks to this video, I’ve made it a point, when I’m close to the end of a mix, to stop, strip off all of the plug-ins and volume rides that aren’t absolutely essential, zero the faders, and start again. The results have been amazing. Thank you for taking the time to talk about this little-discussed but absolutely vital step in the mixing process!

Man. This series is the ultimate guide for digital recording. Random videos of specific instructions doesn't give us the right idea of the work flow to record a song. Thanks.

This is the best, most comprehensive series of videos to help beginners and professionals alike to learn and improve their skills in mixing and recording. I have recommended this video series to my friends who want to get into mixing and recording and they loved it. Keep up the amazing content. God bless!

If you're not teaching this in a community college in performing arts & music technology, how on Earth not?!

You're a very good teacher, clear in your delivery, congruent with most of your public and very structured in your teaching content. I've eaten into my sleeping time watching your videos ... because they are that good!

from 3:30 to about 4:30 I learn something I have been trying to figure out for a long time. I just didn't know what questions to ask. I wish I found this, and the record from scratch series, sooner. Thank you, Sir.

I learned mixing essentially by trial and error over years of learning to record the same way. My stuff didn't sound terrible, but it also didn't sound the way I wanted it to. Decided for my solo album in 2021 that I wanted some guidance in mixing to make it sound better than my past work and this video series played a huge role in making it sound (to my ears) so good! Now I am back in 2024 working on a new song and EP and giving myself a good refresher. Thank you so so so much!!

This song is so good, I forgot about the lesson.

I can't believe that the mix sounds that good with no eq on individual tracks? The single most important thing is mic placement then.

That song sounds great..I'm trying to learn how to mix, I use studio one 5 professional. I have no ideal what I'm doing when it comes to mixing correctly. I do everything by ear, including playing all instruments ( except drums, use loops and pads)..

Graham, I've just recently found your website - and I don't know how long you've been playing and recording - but I can almost guess it's been a while. I'm from the reel-to-reel days (Revox A77 - Teac A3344) and, like you, I'm blown away by the 'digital' revolution for music makers. I've finally decided to take the dive into home recording again. Thanks for sharing your phenomenal talent that you've developed over the years. It's a pleasure to watch you work.

It's often overlooked, but static mix is really important...I just finished up a series of tutorials on my channel, and focusing on the Static Mix is the first thing I recommend for everyone.

I think the most important part in recording is getting good raw tracks to begin with. It takes me a million tries to get the best take when I'm recording and even then the mixing only improves the sound a little. I would do just about anything to get raw audio tracks like his. If all he did was adjust the levels of these tracks this song would already sound 10x better than the mixes I spend days working on
